Iowa sstp 2012

It took 15 minutes to fill out the UI app, but you need to have your HS mail UI a transcript, and this has to be done by May 1.
Nope, no lab placement yet for second round …
@musicrox1815 - would you mind to share your stats with us, when did you get accepted, what’s your 1st choice, 2nd choice etc… Thanks

@others that haven’t post your stats - please share you stats with us, so we can establish how strong the applicants for this program
Thanks

From what I have experienced with UI SSTP, I conclude that the decisions are heavily influenced on when they were turned in.

I was accepted as stated previously.

I was wondering if I could contact professors to do my own research?

Also bbcarol, I was accepted into the week long MITES program called E2@MIT. (:

@spaddes, what’s this week long program about?
Btw, I think it does’t hurt to ask.

Lab Notifcation will be sent out for all selected ones on 4/16 per SSTP website.

It’s basically an abbreviated version of the MITES program, to my understanding. You choose a subject (compsci, microbiology, electricalengineering and something else) and then I believe you work in groups to design and conduct / create a project.
It’s free and at MIT so I’m certainly going. But I need a program that also allows me attend that as well as something longer which looks like SSTP. But I really want a bit of autonomy in my project.
Mm I think I’ll email her. (:

Ah! Sorry, thought I posted my stats. Anyway, I’m a junior, a girl, and I’m from the upper Midwest.
Unweighted GPA: 3.99
ACT: 34 then 35
I think I had internal medicine as first choice, and then genetics/genomics? Don’t really remember. I got accepted really late, I think it was April 2nd?
I play varsity tennis

I guess I’ll start the whole UI thing today, and call the other program to see if they’ve done admissions yet. Thanks guys!

@spaddes: I’ve only heard of MITES before, not E2@MIT, but E2 sounds like a really cool program!
What did you list as your top choices for research topic at SSTP?

My stats:
I’m a junior, a guy, and from right here in Iowa
Unweighted GPA: 4.00
SAT: 2300, haven’t taken ACT
1st choice: Biology, 2nd choice: Microbiology, 3rd choice: Internal Medicine
I was accepted March 7.

Hey I have a question here.
I am placed in psychology lab.
but I have no lab experience and I have never taken any psychology courses.
Do you still suggest me to attend? would it be too intensive? :O

@kikichang I don’t think too many of us have experience here, so don’t worry, just do your best, learn and have fun ! Is Psyc your first choice ?
BTW, mind to share your stats with us ?
Thanks

My stats:
I’m a sophomore from Cali.
Unweighted GPA: 4.00
PSAT: 204
1st choice: Psychology 2nd choice: Physics 3rd choice: Molecular Bio
accepted on March 7th.

@bbcarol: thanks. that’s a great relief.

Hmm…seems like everyone’s from California!

Just a reminder for those of you that didn’t see the transcript part of the email. Make sure you apply to UI and mail UI (not belin-blank) a transcript by May 1 if you are going to SSTP.

Has everyone been placed in a lab already? I thought they would notify us by today but I still haven’t been placed.

I also got into UC Davis Young Scholars Program, but I’m not sure which program I’m going to go to… It depends on what lab I’m placed in for SSTP.

@archaic (love your username btw)
I put down, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Ecology
Though if I don’t get assigned soon I might change Chemistry to something easier to assign like maybe epidemiology?

@spaddes, thanks! Your username is pretty cool too x)
Hmm I don’t think you can change your choices anymore… or if you try to, they might get annoyed since they’ve probably already contacted professors.
How did requesting a more independent research project go? (I emailed Ms. Warren once but she never replied…)

Did anyone else have trouble paying for SSTP (not college credits)? It sent me an email saying that the transaction had an error and Ms. Warren hasn’t replied to my panicked email about it  just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem

@shinexalive,
You will have to call the Belin-Blank Center, ask to talk to Pam, and she can help you with the payments. If you are in school, have your mom call for you. We can’t do it online either.
@ archaic
You will need to call them and ask to talk to the person who is doing lab placements.
I’m sorry I can’t give you a name, but there is a person (not Ms. Warren) who is doing the lab placement. If you can’t call during school, have your mom call during the day. It’s not too late to see if you can change your choices, these are all independent research, I think you might be able to tell them that you want to work by yourself?
What was your choices ?

@archaic The woman in charge of the lab placements is Dr. Degner. If you still want her email, pm me I can give it to you. I still don’t have a lab placement , but he said she was working on it.
