Iowa SSTP 2014 Admission

Hi, just wondering if anyone else was accepted into the 2014 Iowa SSTP summer program......I've heard great things about it but does anyone else know more information about it as well?

I was accepted also!! i’m not sure if i’m going to go yet though.

@violet yea, I’m not 100% sure if I’ll go, since I’m waiting on some other programs as well. I’m from California by the way, in the Bay Area  I’ve chatted with some of the SSTP alumni at my school, and they tell me it’s an amazing experience, so I’ll probably might still go anyways

Accepted too. I’m also waiting on other program. Deadline to accept offer and first payment due is 4/10. I wonder if it is possible to extend it.

Im also from Bay Area! @Dew123‌

Do you guys think its worth the money (around $6,000)? Is the research experience legit?

Yeah I’m also waiting for a couple of other programs that aren’t coming out soon so I don’t know what to do…

I don’t think it’s possible to extend it. If your stats are good enough to get into SSTP, chances are you’re going to get into another program. I’m going to be going to another program, mainly because I feel like 5 weeks is too little time for me and the cost is kind of high.

@omnipotent24 Did you already get accepted to another program or are you expecting the acceptance?
I want to do something over summer and I’m nervous I won’t get into another program…

@violetflowerz the research at the program is legit, from what i can tell, although it depends on which kind of lab you get.
@ilapple i don’t think that they can extend the deadline, but you can ask them just in case

@violetflowerz‌ I’m expecting an acceptance at one specific program; I’m scared that I wont get in another one as well but I don’t think my parents would be willing to speng $6000 for five weeks so that was a major factor in my decision.

@Dew123‌ Yeah, the research at the program is pretty good. From past participants, I heard that it varies on the project/topic you get, but submission to Intel/Siemens seems unlikely with 5 weeks of research.

@omnipotent24 For SSTP, I think you’ll be working on one of the professor’s projects, and depending on the project, it could be barely started or almost done. However, you would still need to confirm with the professors–due to privacy restraints–about if you would be able to use their research for a competition. From what the past participants have said, this program is mainly for lab experience, though not necessarily for working on a project for a science competition like Intel/Siemens. Also, I think you can apply for financial aid to get it at only half the price minimum, but I’m unsure about what is needed to qualify for that. I wish you the best for your other programs! :)

eyyy i finally found this year’s discussion…
i attended SSTP last year, so hmu w/ questions if you got any!

and just for reference, in case anyone wondered, here are the posters from last year’s:
http://www2.education.uiowa.edu/belinblank/students/summer/SSTP_Posters.aspx

@science2015, is it possible to enter school science fair with the project done at SSTP? I know 5 week camp is pretty short. How’s the food there? Wat about activities besides lab work?

yes, you can enter your project into competitions! 5 weeks is a bit short, and last year’s camp was 6 weeks instead, but i’m sure you can make significant progress under your mentor’s guidance.

the food isn’t that great but it’s really not that bad either…the food in the cafeteria place is included in the camp cost, but there are places that isn’t pre-paid that you can go to (if i remember correctly, there’s indian food, chinese food, pizza, ice cream, froyo, sandwiches, burgers, etc.)

besides lab work, there’s sometimes free time and sometimes organized activities, which include things like going to an amusement park (full day field trip!), presentations given by professors, and MAHJONG (we actually learned how to play and had a sort-of tournament). there’s also an athletic center a few minutes (like 15?) away that doesn’t need a membership since you get a student ID at SSTP, if that’s something you wanna do.

@science2015, thanks for the information. Playing MAHJONG sounds like a fun activity!

@science2015 do you know jesse and landon? They told me something similar about the program, and that they went out for night runs for food

EYYYYY  yeah, since SSTP only had like 30 people it ended up being a pretty close group; we all knew each by name at the very least and well, 6 weeks living in close quarters tends to make people fast friends

Do you know how the engineering division of UofIowa is? I was placed with Dr. Salam Rahmatalla in the engineering lab. Also how much money did you guys bring to buy the chinese food, pizza, etc. outside of the college campus? Thanks!

shoot, i can’t really answer any of those questions, since: 1) i was placed in bio, and 2) i used a debit card to make things easier…sorry :(

Hey, did anyone else confirm for acceptance into the program? My other program didn’t send out the results yet, and I don’t want to risk losing this camp. I’d still probably would attend either way though :)

@science2015 sorry for all the questions… :stuck_out_tongue: but i’m just wondering if it’s possible for me to leave SSTP for a couple days for a competition. FBLA Nationals coincides with the program, and it’s in Tennessee this year (not too far from Iowa). Would they be fine with it if it’s only for 2-3 days?
