Iowa SSTP 2017

Hey! There wasn’t a thread, so I decided to make one. Did anyone else apply?

I did! I’m so nervous for the results.

Me too! Where are you applying from? @eliop0606

I’m applying from California as a sophomore, or rising junior. how about you @Anniqueg

I’m a rising junior as well, from New York. Not that confident I’ll get in, but figured I’d give it a shot.

Anyone knows how many people are accepted last year?

I applied too! Rising junior.

I kinda applied on a whim. It’s an expensive program. Does anyone know how competitive it is, or if it’s more of a cash grab?

Hello guys,

Due to snow days in Washington, my school district extended their semester by a week and it screwed me over because I couldn’t turn in my 10th grade transcript  Also, my SSTP essay is kinda bad compared to my other program essay because SSTP was the only program where it was due february. What do you guys think would be my chances in the program? Also, I didn’t turn in my ACT or SAT score but I turned in my SAT subject test scores for bio and math 2 (both perfect). I hope that’s fine.

haha SSTP was actually the only program I applied to. I figured that if I don’t get in, I could spend my summer
prepping for the devastating junior year of high school. So we shall our results on Monday!

@gkdudtlffj In terms of transcripts, they probably understand. Did you ever email them to let them know? Also, we’re not the best people to judge your chances, because even if we do have your stats, we still don’t know how your LORs went or how good your essay was (and I think those two have the most weight, logically speaking). If there was an option for the SAT subject test scores on the portal, I think you’re good.

Good luck!

@eliop0606 Only program I applied to as well! Like I mentioned, it’s a long shot for me.

@gkdudtlffj Perfect scores? That’s awesome!

@gkdudtlffj @Anniqueg @thelittleswimmer Just curious, what field did you guys apply for through your essays?
I applied for biology

I did physics and astronomy. I haven’t actually taken physics yet, so if I get into the program it probably won’t be for that.

@eliop0606 I did biology and anatomy/physiology. I think. I remember I went back and forth between anatomy/physiology and chemistry, haha

@thelittleswimmer same here! I do not mind both subjects, actually, but I would prefer biology.
@Anniqueg that sounds interesting! But how do you know you are into physics if you haven’t taken it yet?

@eliop0606 I’ve loved physics forever but really realized it in middle school. Astrophysics is so incredibly beautiful, I could enthuse about it for hours (but don’t worry! I won’t here. You’re safe). I also took a college credit astronomy class last semester, and take astrophysics courses after school at AMNH. It’s just something I’m into. And ya know, internet resources make it easy.

@thelittleswimmer I did email them on sunday after the deadline but they responded the day after the deadline and told me “We are unable to accept any application materials past the deadline and outside of the online application system. For equity purposes all applications are reviewed based on the information applicants have available at the time of the deadline.” So… I don’t think the entire admission committee knows. I hope my 9th grade transcript would suffice but they don’t know my 10th grade course load lol. I think my LOR went really good saying that my teachers liked me a lot and my essays weren’t really good  I don’t think I have a good chance on this program so I am hoping for my other admission results

@eliop0606 I applied to Biology and Chemistry

Hi guys! I’m a rising senior in Iowa. Applied to Biology and Chemistry as well! My essays were bad as I didn’t spend a lot of time editing. I do have some experience doing biology research and I’m currently doing one. From threads of previous years this programs seems really fun. The cost is so high though. I’m a little anxious that the results will come out tomorrow.

Anyone get an “alternate” email in error?
