Hello!
I am currently a highschool sophomore, and I was looking into some summer programs to boost my future college resume as well as my research experience. So I found SSTP along with a couple of other camps ( for example, Wyoming SRAP). I’m not sure how this program is, because there isnt really alot of info on it. Could any past attendees tell me how their experience was and what you got out of it? If you know, could you tell me how it is compared to SRAP? And I am also very interested in engineering/chemistry/ Sustainable energy, so would this program be right for me? I really want a quality research time to give me experience and insight into some subjects, and i wasnt sure if the $6000 tuition was really worth it I’ve heard the campus and the quality of the staff are amazing though
Thank you for your time guys!
Also, if any of you know a summer program/internship pertaining to engineering/chemistry/ Sustainable energy, could you guys please tell me? thanks!
I guess some stats about me:
PSAT= 1350 ( 213 equivalent to the old PSAT)
UWGPA= 3.7
WGPA= 4.0
THANK YOU ALL!!!
@joshuakim11 how does 1350 PSAT = 213. What were your individual scores out of 38?
the new PSAT is out of 1520, and my overall score was a 1350.
im not sure if this is the right way to calculate it but using ratios i did:
1350 times 240= 324000
and then 324000 divided by 1520, which equals 213.
its simple cross multiplication, @kyrieIrving2
That’s not how the new selection index is calculated. On your score sheet you should see 3 scores out of 38. One for math, one for reading, and one for English. To get your selection index score you add up all of you scores out of 38 and then multiply by 2. So my score this year was 211. I got 32.5 on math, 37 on English, and 36 on reading. Add those up and multiply by 2 and you get my si score of 211
haha isnt the selection index a bit different from the actual score? I heard its just to determine your merit eligibility and is a different score than the actual number score out of 1520. I dont think the NMSC index score directly translates into a 240 scale @kyrieIrving2
Anyways, putting that aside (I guess it doesnt really matter for me right now), how was your experience at SSTP? I’m just trying to determine if i should even consider going or not. Thanks for the help!
Hi, I’m also a sophomore interested in SSTP. Does anyone know how selective it is?
@alan2000 according to the website, they say it fluctuates from year to year but last year they claim that “Acceptance to SSTP is competitive. Of the 168 applicants to the program in 2015, thirty-nine students were admitted and paired with faculty mentors.” thats around a 23% acceptance rate.
@joshuakim11 Thanks for the information. I’ve heard great things about the program, and it sounds interesting. I think I’m probably going to apply, and hopefully I get accepted. What programs are you planning to apply to?
@alan2000 I was going to apply for SSTP but it seems kinda pricey for me, and im still considering it.
Guys don’t be mislead by these kind of “admissions statistics.” Note how they say 39 were admitted AND paired with a mentor. That doesn’t mean 39 people were admitted. It means of all the people admitted, 39 chose to attend. Other programs such as UF SSTP and BU RISE do the same thing with fuzzing statistics. The most selective programs explicitly write their acceptance rate or at least the number of applications received and accepted.
