Iowa State, Depaul, Or Loyola-Chicago? help plz i got 8 days to decide

I am a transfer student majoring in chemistry, however i want to switch to chemical engineering. i honestly have no clue which one i should go to. Each has some pros and cons and IDK which I would prefer more

Depaul:
Pro- In the city, diverse, 45 minute drive from home, "friendliest campus"
Con- only a co op program for chemical engineering which requires me to spend more years at depaul and IIT, EXPENSIVE, heard this school was a diploma mill from current students

Loyola-
Pro- In the city but outside of it at the same time, 40 minute drive from home, tier 1 school, good chemistry programs
Con- EXPENSIVE, no school spirit, no chemical engineering program except co op programs that eventually lead me to iowa state

Iowa State University-
Pro: Great chemical engineering school, will have a real college experience, cheaper than Depaul and loyola even though out of state, and was accepted to double major in chemical engineering and chemistry, and job placement rate from this school is extremely high for the fields i wanted to apply to
Con: 600 miles away from home, guy to girl ratio is bad for guys (not a big deal, but still kind of sucks), heard it gets kind of boring if you lived by a city and moved here

I’d go with Iowa State. A big university like that probably has enough going on to keep you entertained, and it has great pros.

So your choices are two expensive schools that have no ChemEng major, or a cheaper one with a “real college experience” that does? Sounds like a no-brainer.

as i said, i want to switch, but then again i don’t have to. Only reason Iowa State became an option was because i was accepted on the terms that i can double major on each. Seattle U/U of Iowa were both dropped from the list because of that.

plus the distance away from home, longest i’ve been away from my parents is a week, idk how it will work out ofr half a year

You can’t be 40 minutes from Chicago and 600 miles from Ames, IA. Ames is 300 mi. from Chicago.

Did you look into UIC for Chem E?

oh sorry, i checked it in google, it showed 2 things that said 297 miles, didn’t realize it was asking questions instead of giving the actual directions

and i didn’t apply to UIC, i was rejected applying my senior year of high school. I figured if they didn’t believe me back then, why should i go there now.

Why don’t you just go to IIT?

never applied, didnt even know it existed

It sounds like you’re attending a community college now, and need to transfer. If so, I wouldn’t look at a combined program because you’ll be transferrring again in a year or two. Pick an enguineering program that has what you want and go there.

IIT is not that tough to get into. It’s very urban, and a lot of students live locally and are from foriegn backgrounds. Guy to girl ratio does not favor the guys. If you are considering it at all, you need to visit. Of the three Chicago schools, it has the worst reputation as far as campus life, although it’s improving. I wouldn’t recommend DePaul for engineering prep.

You could reapply to UIC. But go for Iowa State. My nephew didn’t want to be 300 mi. from home, but when that became his only option, he managed and will soon graduate.

(The only guy I knew from Iowa State was a wonderful man).

In the end i chose Iowa State. Originally my plans were Seattle University, but they only accepted 10% of my credits from my CC.

UIC, unfortunately the lack of school spirit, the ugliness of the campus (i am going to live there for 2 years or more), the overall dirty look of the place made me happy that i was never taken in a couple years back. It was a blessing in disguise.

Loyola- Good school, was my backup school, but no engineering program and the lack of a campus life i decided not to. I was just about to send in my admissions acceptance until I was recommended to take a look at iowa state some more by former alumni.

Depaul- Heard mix reviews about their academics.

Iowa state- i talked to a bunch of random people there through facebook and other forums. Everyone was extremely friendly and answered everything i could possibly imagine. I have yet to hear a bad thing from alumni & current students, and i figured it would be the right place for me. Educational and lifestyle wise.

So yep, sent my deposit today. Im excited :)

Congratulations! I think you made a good choice.

Me too. Congrats and good luck!

Iowa State sounded like the best choice by far. Best wishes.
