Iowa State Vs. Ohio State

Iowa State Vs. Ohio State. Which one would offer me a better mechanical engineering education?

Both probably about the same. Which one is cheaper?

Both would be fine.

Are you instate for one? If so, won’t that one be more affordable?

How would you pay for the OOS school(s).

Ranking: Ohio State ranks roughly 20 spots ahead of Iowa State both in overall Engineering School and Mechanical Engineering sub-specialty.

Better: Probably Ohio State as it recently opened the $100 million Scott Laboratory - Home of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Scholastically, TOSU’s faculties are more distinguished in their respective specialities and in-coming students are always more selective.

Cheaper: Probably even?! Ohio State has been offering ‘National Buckeye Scholarship’ - $8,700 a year for qualified OOS students which is super rare amongst the Top Public Universities given today’s economy. Of course, if you are an Iowa resident ISU should probably be a better for you in terms of tuition.

I’m not “in-state” for either of these colleges. I’d pay with scholarships, grants, loans, etc.
Iowa state is cheaper then Ohio state, and a bit smaller of a school. Also, I think I can get more money from Iowa State with my scores, then I could from Ohio. I just want to make sure , if I go to Iowa State, that I’d get just as good of an engineering education as Ohio State could give.

Iowa State has an online net price calculator. With decent grades and test scores you will probably get at least $5000 merit aid from Iowa State. I would bet that ISU will end up being several thousand less.

You might need to look more into this.

From another thread, you have a 25 ACT, but you’re waiting new scores. Unless your scores go up a lot, you won’t be getting much/any scholarships.

Grants are need-based. If you’re low-income, then you might get up to a $5500 Pell Grant, but you may not get any other free money. As for loans, you can only borrow $5500. So, not enough to pay for OOS costs.

How much will your family contribute?

If money is an issue, then you need to be very careful. What state are you in? Your most affordable option may be an instate school.

If you’re low income, you might get state aid to go to a school within your own state.
