Hi guys! I recently stumbled upon the Iowa Young Writer’s Studio’s online classes. I know that their traditional summer studio where you stay at Iowa University and work in a studio is already really prestigious, but do you guys know anything about the online classes they’re offering? I didn’t even know they existed until yesterday, and I can’t find anything on them online other than on the Iowa website!
I’m mainly concerned with how prestigious these online classes are compared to the actual studio/compared to other summer programs. Like, is it just as selective, or is it a money grab directed those who weren’t able to make it through admissions of the actual summer program?
Hi! So I signed up for these (I’m in Creative Writing: A Perusable Feast w/ Riley Johnson) and recently got in. I checked my course info on their website and it says there are 2 Creative Writing classes for Jan. 14-Feb. 21, and each have 18 kids enrolled. I don’t know how many applicants these online classes had total, but adding together the 3 possible courses they had to choose from with let’s say 36 kids each, there’s about 108 kids accepted.
That seems kind of prestigious? But I also know that for two of the courses, Iowa kept extending the application deadline, which makes me think they didn’t have a lot of signups.
Also if you want a gauge of my writing abilities, I was rejected from Iowa’s residential young writers program last summer but accepted to Kenyon College’s young writers program (which has a 20% acceptance rate). So I’m hoping Iowa’s online classes are prestigious but who knows?
Hope this helped!
wait jk i lied, i checked all the courses and there’s 71 kids total across all 3 because only Riley Johnson’s has 2 classes, the other 2 have 18 and 17 enrollees.
