iowa young writers studio

Earlier this year, I was accepted into the Iowa Young Writers Studio which is affiliated with the University of Iowa (known for the Writers’ Workshop). Due to flooding, I was not able to attend. No one in my session was.

The question: Could I still include it on my transfer application? Or is it worthless because I didn’t attend? I don’t know, it’s not the ONLY thing going for me, but I was proud of myself, ha.

If only I could get into The New Yorker. :p I'd be golden and wouldn't have to worry about a thing.

Assuming it’s a selective program, then you should still put it down and state the reason you couldn’t attend. Just getting into a highly selective program says something about your writing abilities.

Thank you for clearing that up.

I think it’s fairly selective. They choose 120 total (60 kids per session) and 400+ applied this year, if I remember correctly.

If you know the actual acceptance stats (sometimes they give them in the acceptance letter), you can put that information on your application. Admissions folks likely know the acceptance rates for programs like TASP and RSI, but they may not be familiar with how competitive admissions are for some of the smaller programs, so it doesn’t hurt to give them the info.

Best of luck!
