iowa young wrtiers' studio

hi -
i was wondering if anyone else on CC was applying to this creative writing program besides me. i knew about the prestigious-ish writers studio (raymond carver, jane smiley, michael cunningham, sandra cisneros went there!) but only recently found out that there was one for young writers.

so. anyone applying?

i am!! the writer's studio is INCREDIBLE. so of course, i was completely bowled over when i found that they had one for young writers (taught by students and teachers at the actual studio, i believe- someone correct me if i'm wrong). in any case, it does sound really cool.

unfortunately, i haven't compiled a portfolio/started the application at all. nor have i found teacher recs or transcripts. but i don't think it's due til march 1st...right?

i might apply. still winging it on summer plans right now..

does anyone know how competitive admissions is?

is the studio really taught by students and teachers at the actual studio? that'd be absolutely marvelous.

unefleursauvage - tis true: everything's due march 1st. i donno how i'm going to get 10-pgs of *good * creative writing done.
i just emailed stephen lovely (the director) with your question. hopefully he'll respond soon. : )

if you're applying, what workshop (creative writing, fiction, poetry) and session are you considering?

How competitive is it?

i'm considering either creative writing or fiction. not sure about the session yet. (and purpoisepal, i'm wondering the same thing)

Stephen said last year 400 people applied for the 120available spots in the program. You do the math.

Another question - what do you write down for academic interests?

can HS kids do this also? or is it just college age kids?

i think it's just for high-schoolers (finishing 10th, 11th, or 12th grade). someone correct me if i'm wrong?

thanks for thie info. I can go to their website to check.

do you think it affects your app if you check no preference, but note a preference towards one section? i'm wondering because it does say that you can restrict your chances by only applying to one session, but does it affect your chances if you simply state a certain preference?

most likely no.
i'm doing the same thing.

but back to my question (if you don't mind ;) :
what the heck do they mean by academic interests?
do they want you to just list a subject???

haha that's good :)

and yes, for academic interests, i listed my favorite subjects. for extracurriculars, did you just list them, w/o awards or positions or anything? i don't really have room for that, but idk...

My d who is in 11th grade this year is applying for the second session and very interested in going. All she needs to complete her application is the letter from her teacher.

I'm applying to this as well (for second session). I have a short story that fills their ten-page requirement, double-spaced that is, so that's what I'm submitting. And as for extracurriculars, just list them. That's what I did, anyway. We can revive this thread when we find out if we got in or not...

Getting my app together probably for the second session. Is the 10 pg single spaced, double spaced, or doesn't it matter? I've managed to get 10 papers, poems, passages, really short stories, and excerpts from stories, to cover 10 pages, and I figured that was a nice even number. shrug I feel like they want longer things, but many of my short stories are really short.

As for extracurriculars it said extracurricular interests so I put things like reading, movie editing as opposed to clubs (though I did add newspaper). Academic I asked my father who told me, "literature" so my academic things sound rather snobby, haha. So yeah academic interests I'd say put a class...a subject...or even writing might count.

Hi all,

I attended IYWS the summer of my sophomore year, and am happy to report that the experience changed my life. Many of the kids around me were brilliant writers and thinkers who had read every book imaginable; the environment itself was teeming with explosive creative energy. Amazing stuff.

If there are any questions, feel free to ask!

Oooh! Thanks! I have like a ton of questions.

First of all, do you have class every day or only on the weekdays? Can you give me like an example of a typical day (with times and stuff)? Two weeks seems kind of short... Do you feel like it was long enough to really improve your writing? How many people are in a class? What's the best thing about IYWS? And the worst thing? What are the dorms like? And the food? What's Iowa like? What do you do in your spare time? Do you get a lot of homework? Do you do more reading or writing? If you could do it again, would you? Anything else you would like me to know?

Thanks! :)

Lol...I think PurpoisePal covered most of my questions...I guess I'll ask more logistical ones: When did you get your acceptance from the studio, and how difficult is it to get in if you're not a competition-winning/etc type writer, but more of one who does it for a hobby?

Thanks :)
