IPEDS 2018 SAT ACT Scores Top 100, Engineering reporting schools

I queried a set of schools from the IPEDS data set just released that reported engineering data only 650+ schools resulted.

I noticed that some LACS are missing probably because they didn’t report engineering data.

Seems odd that this list of “engineering only” test scores includes schools with no engineering majors.

Like Fordham? Maybe they are counting students in the 3+2 programs?

@Eeyore123

Like I said, these schools listed the number of students enrolled in engineering.

Fordham lists 110 total engineering students. 55 men, 55 women.

So maybe it is a joint program.

@ucbalumnus

These scores are for the school overall. Not engineering.

I believe Purdue’s report is the average SAT for the University overall, not engineering. COE reports SAT in the middle 50% range of 1350-1470 and an ACT Composite of 30-34.

Wondering if that’s true for other schools on the list?

Are these just released scores? They seem to match those from the fall of 2018 in the examples I checked. As far as I know, IPEDs doesn’t post averages. Did you infer your figures from ranges? Did you round up the ACT inferred average in all cases? With respect to your ordering, it would seem logical to use the ACT to break ties in cases of equivalent SAT scores (or weight/convert scores in proportion to their prevalence).

As suggested in other replies, it seems the posted standardized scoring figures bear little connection to students in engineering programs, who comprise a minority at most of the listed schools.

@momofsenior123

I believe that it’s stated.

I am not understanding where the averages in post #1 come from. The Common Data Set has included no composite data for SAT (prior to 2019-2020), no averages for either SAT or ACT, and no engineering-specific scores, right?

@evergreen5: The OP appears to have inferred SAT averages from general IPEDS data for 2018. Oberlin’s range, for example, (when combined) registers at 1280–1490 in IPEDS, which, by this method, would produce the 1385 in the original post. Oberlin indicates no engineering majors, however.

https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=Oberlin&s=all&id=204501#admsns

https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=Oberlin&s=all&id=204501#programs

Counting 3+2 program students at the “3” school can be misleading, since few of them actually transfer to the “2” school.

Regarding Fordham specifically, it does list 26 graduates in engineering physics (not a 3+2 program) for a recent class: https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=fordham&s=all&id=191241#programs . However, it does not appear to have ABET accreditation.

But then you have schools like CMC, Scripps, and Oberlin.

Do colleges have 3+2 programs in the sense this suggests? It seems that in most scenarios the program officially arises only with matriculation at the “2” school.

That’s not an “average enolled SAT score”. That’s an average of the 25th percentile score and the 75th percentile score for the entire university, which may or may not be the actual, unknown, median SAT score.

ACT scores must be rounded up, as Caltech is 35/36 for 2018.

Carnegie Mellon has 14,799 students in the University and and 3,949 in CIT, the engineering college, which is about 27%. For just undergrads it’s 25%.

What does “ Highest percentage of engineering students:

Carnegie Mellon University 60”

mean?

@Greymeer Can you please give a brief explanation of how to query your “Most engineering students” list from the IPEDS database? I’ve tried but haven’t been able to. Thanks!
