Our family plan is Verizon and we are getting my Stanford Freshman the highly suggested Iphone for his college years. He will mainly text but will also be calling home to the East Coast quite a bit to our Verizon phones (I hope, that is). Can anyone suggest the type of plan we should consider. Also, I saw on this board that Stanford students are eligible for some sort of discount...does anyone know more so I can speak with the rep with a little more info or knowledge about same?

the iPhone forces you to get a really expensive data plan. if all he wants to do is text and call, and he doesn’t need to use the internet on his phone, then do not buy an iPhone. buy one of at&t’s “messaging phones”.

I have an iPhone, and I use it to make calls to my parents’ Verizon phones. I also have unlimited texting. The iPhone is very very nice, especially when you want information quickly, or you’re out on the go and need a map. Also, the iStanford application on the iPhone is very helpful and useful for everyday university life. I read a statistic online that around half of the undergraduate student body owns an iPhone, so it makes life pretty easy.
I pay for my own plan. I bought my iPhone, activated it online on the Apple website (choosing the plan with the smallest number of minutes, but with unlimited texting), got it activated at the Apple Store, and then got on to the Stanford AT&T website and requested the Stanford discount, which takes $30 off your overall cost. Doesn’t sound like much, but it’s actually very nice. I’ve never gone over my limit of minutes, even though my parents have Verizon.

I switched from Verizon to AT&T and got an iPhone because I heard the service was really good there for AT&T.

don’t get an Iphone for your child. It will be a big distraction. Facebook/surf during lecture which means not paying attention in class

15% discount. Just give them the foundation number available online at stanford.edu

plzzz thats ridiculous. If a kid is bright enough to get into stanford I am sure he has a fine work ethic and can be trusted with a phone. You can also skip lectures or surf the internet on a labtop, while you pretend to take notes.

well that’s pretty much what everyone does in class at Stanford. facebook in lecture
