IR at JHU

hi everyone

if I say that I want to major in IR on my JHU supplement
will that lower my chances of being admitted?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: No.

It will if you have shown absolutely no interest in IR over your high school career.

does translating for Amnesty international, starting a fundraiser to fight desertification and doing lots of volunteer work count?

Do you really need to ask  That’s exactly what they’re looking for (in terms of involvement with your major, or at least that’s what they suggest). Best of luck!!

Agreed - I just want to add that Hopkins is not just pre-med. It is very academically diverse and offers an array of majors and minors. And being an IR major myself, they have a very strong IR department and it is one of the most popular majors at JHU.

oh really bluejay13?
I also heard it is rlly competitive and so some of the students get stressed out?
Anouchi, thanks for the encouragement!

Bluejay13 can give a more insightful answer I am sure…but from my Daughters stories IR is not “Competitive”. Getting into JHU is competitive and keeping good grades at JHU is a lot of hard work (esp Freshman year). But students don’t compete with each other as much as they work hard for getting grades.

hi doris820505,

I want to add on to imontoya’s response - which I agree with - I would definitely say that IR is not competitive. From my experience thus far (I am a freshman), my classmates in my IR classes have been supportive and hardworking. A lot of the students here, regardless of his/her major, have a drive to work, and that sometimes can be mistaken as competitive. The majority of students will help you whenever you ask for it. If I miss class, my classmates will give me their notes, or if I have difficulty on homework or understanding something, they will help me out.

If it’s any help - here’s some student blogs who are majoring in IR: [Academics Blog International Studies *](http://blogs.hopkins-interactive.com/academics/category/international-studies/).

Hopkins Interactive also has forums in which prospective students and those who are considering to apply can post questions, concerns, etc., and current students will help you out: [Welcome to the Hopkins Forums](http://forums.hopkins-interactive.com/index/)

Hope this helps!
