IR: How necessary are Econ prereqs?

I'm in a particular situation, studying and working in Taiwan. I'll be applying for IR programs in January, and I'm curious about the econ prereqs.

I've never studied econ in the classroom, but it was a part of many of my poli sci and English (I'm not kidding) classes. So, while I might not have a background in the basics of micro- and macro-economics, I've read a lot of Sachs, Sen, Stiglitz, etc. I know a lot about development and globalization.

Maybe that's all beside the point. Back to Taiwan...

So, I've been looking for ways to get the prereqs while I'm here, but I haven't come up with anything yet. I know some universities in town offer econ classes in English (My Chinese isn't good enough yet to study econ), but I haven't come up with anything that wouldn't be extremely inconvenient.

I've also thought of doing online courses, but I don't know how much esteem these programs have for the University of Pheonix' online economics classes.

So, what would you do in my position.

Oh, the programs: Fletch, SAIS, SIPA, AU, and several other possibles (GW, Georgetown, etc.)

@ rmaguir

If economics is strongly recommended, I would definitely try to take Intro Macroecon and Intro Microecon. You will need the quantitative knowledge.
