International Residential College: Anybody know anything about this place, whats it like...

Hey I just got my housing assignment and I’m staying at Gwathmey house in IRC. No idea what its going to be like. R u going to be staying there too?

I’m in Gwathmey also. I didn’t apply for IRC so I don’t know whats up with that, anybody know? I too would like more info on IRC and Gwathmey in particular. Will there be more First years in IRC this coming year? I’m from the Boston area, not international. The place sounds kind of interesting and the location looks decent.

Another Gwathmey here (3rd floor), I’m from Northern Virginia…nothing international about me (white, never been out of the country). I guess a lot of us got placed here since they expanded from 60 to 100 first years this year. Anyone who knows anything please share, sounds fun. What floor are you guys on in Gwathmey?

Cool… 3rd floor also!

irc is very cool. one of my very southern backwoodsy friends has lived there for years, you don’t have to be international. there are all sorts of cool activities always happening because it’s a residential college. it’s right across the street from the tennis courts, near mem gym and the bookstore. you’ll have a good time.

do you know what the people are like there, is it mainly bookworms or do people go out, for some reason i get a vibe that its going to be all asian/middle eastern poindexters…

I was a little surpised when I saw I was in the IRC considering I never applied. I’m on the third floor as well. Living in the IRC does sound interesting, but I just hope it’s location won’t set us apart from the rest of the first years.

can you characterize an entire dorm as bookworms/partiers? …no.

Well that is how they assign us, so I think you can. I have heard McCormick is more the party dorms.

Anyone have any other information about the IRC?

Hey scramble n goodschoolhopefully…I’m on 3rd floor too.
I’m an international…so I did some research before putting irc as my first choice…(changed my mind afterwards and didn’t do the application but somehow got put here anyways)
I think it’s unfair to generalize about the people at the IRC…but that said…the place itself won’t be having parties in the traditional sense. Most of it will be alternative activities like clubs, sports, discussions, gatherings…but I’ve heard people do go out to party at other parts of the campus.

add me on facebook: as7ce@virginia.edu

u guys should check out this topic on the uva facebook group…it has all the first years going to irc:

[OFFICIAL University of Virginia Class of 2013 Group Discussions | Facebook](Redirecting...)

btw so far…the trend I’m seeing is that all those people that didn’t apply but still got placed at irc are all on the 3rd floor haha…cuz all the people on the facebook forum seem to be on the 1st floor.

Woohoo! The next batch lol – there were like 0 other CC’ers (okay 1) who went to the IRC last year.

Let me draft a guide in a bit, don’t have the time now …

Also, trust me, the IRC knows how to party … we just don’t black out as frequently as McCormick does because we party smarter. ;)

ALSO important is whether you’re a girl or a boy, because as far as first-year placement goes, first-year girls get placed into Munford while first-year boys get placed either on 3rd floor Gwathmey or on the first floor near the Munford-Gwathmey connecting breezeway.

hey galoisien

You should post your guide on the fb group topic too…the one ive linked above. Btw…r u from singapore?

guide, eh?

I lived in the IRC my first year and am going to be there next year too! yipeeee :)

The IRC is a wonderful place. There is a very tight knit community and everyone knows everyone else. With all the free food, it is impossible not to love the place! there are BBQs every now and then and everyone comes out to have fun.
There is a good mix of people at the IRC - bookworms and partiers and people fall in the middle. Everyone is fun, even if they don’t party! You can always find people who have similar interests as you at the IRC!
The IRC really did make my first year experience absolutely wonderful and I am excited to meet all of you in the fall!

Hi, I got assigned IRC Gwathmey in a double room. Would anyone like to trade, I would really like a single.
