Irish Abroad Student

Im an irish university student and I have decided to take a year to study in an american college as part of my degree. I have a few options in colleges like university of miami, boston college and some others in south carolina and kentucy. At the moment boston college stands out for me. Any one who goes boston know not only about the education end of things but the social element also?

Im 20 so would be under the drinking age there, would I still be able to go out and have a few drinks, are the bars and clubs strict over in the states? there many parties around during the week? My college in Maynooth in Ireland had some quality parties and Im very much a social person. I want to make sure I make the right decision acedemicaly as well as socially.?

You’ll probably get more help if you post this on the Boston College board- [Boston College - College Confidential](Boston College - College Confidential Forums)

As I said a few weeks ago when you posted this same drinking question, you won’t have much trouble getting alcohol to drink at most US colleges, but you might have to “stay in” to get a drink rather than “go out.” In other words, you can probably get plenty drink at college parties at frat houses and such, but most bars or restaurants in the US will not knowingly serve alcohol to an underage minor. They stand to lose their licenses if they get caught doing so.

Bars can lose their licenses if they serve to underage patrons. Therefore, agressive “carding” is often done.

However, that doesn’t mean that students aren’t drinking at parties.

To the others…

Are there still some states where those under 21 can buy beer or some lower alcohol beer? If so, I think you have to be 19, but I’m not sure if those states still have those laws anymore.
