Irrelevant volunteer work?

I have a chance to go to Belize over my winter break to help with volunteer work there, but as a finance and economics major, all I'm asked is "Well, is it practical for your majors?". I thought it would look good, regardless. I'm not going because of how it would look on my resume and was excited to go but other factors came into the picture and I'm 50/50 at the moment, but if it really wouldn't do much to help me with my resume, then it would probably balance me towards not going. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Volunteer work should be about the people you’re helping, not about what you can get out of it.

Would you be doing anything “better” over winter break? I hate saying better as if volunteering isn’t good enough, but I mean it in the sense of…would you be giving up a part-time job or an internship or something like that? A relevant class that you NEED to graduate?

Can you comfortably afford to go? Are you paying for it or are your parents?
