We finally e-filed our tax return last week and it was accepted by the IRS and now I have to make corrections to the original estimates we submitted in January. FAFSA still says it is not yet available, when I link to the IRS retrieval tool, so I think it is too soon to use it. Since I have more than 10 schools to send this data to, do I have to wait a few days between schools since we can only list 10 at a time? Like I did originally? Does this make sense?

I know there are many threads about this, but it is still confusing and I am getting over a four day flu, so I am not thinking as clearly right now and just want to make sure I am going about this correctly.
Thank you.

You are correct - wait to FAFSA to be completed to first 10 schools, then use ‘make corrections’ to delete those 10 and add new set of schools and submit. This is what I’ve done after I used IRS retrieval last week

If we can’t use the IRS retrieval tool, that means we gotta wait longer right?

lilmelon - did you submit original FAFSA using ‘will file’ or ‘already filed’ ? Either way, your original FAFSA date is what important here. You can do retrieval latter, as long as you submitted FAFSA before the college’s deadline.

Yes I submitted on Jan. 1st. Now im waiting to just transfer my parents returns onto the fafsa. I waited for a week already and it says im still not available to use the IRS retrieval tool.

lilmelon - to finalize your FAFSA you can just make all the changes based on your parents tax return and change the status to ‘already filed’. Don’t wait for IRS retrieval. Are you selected for verification? In that case just order the IRS transcript. For us, IRS retrieval and transcript was available couple days after IRS accepted my tax return. Are you expecting refund or owe to IRS? This could make a difference too.

I would give it a few more days. Seven days is on the low end for processing time. You can check the transcript ordering site but a transcript probably isn’t available yet. If your mom is getting a refund you can try the ‘Where’s My Refund’ check at the IRS site but that may not be available yet either. If your parents owe additional money with their return, the retrieval tool and transcript won’t be available until after the IRS gets the additional payment.

I’m in the same boat. We filed taxes on 2-9 and I filled out fafsa yesterday. It wont let me use the retrieval tool. It says its too soon since the IRS has only accepted my taxes and not processed it. What do I do now? my dtrs schools deadline is March 1st. Do I submit it under the “already filed” status AND sign all forms? if so, then how do I go back to use the retrieval tool? or is it too late at that point to use the retrieval tool?

Thanks in advance!

Did you claim and education credit on your taxes? The IRS only started processing returns with education credits on 2/14. Are you getting a refund? If so you could try ‘Where’s My Refund’ at the IRS site and see if anything shows up there yet. If so the tool should be available soon. The March 1 deadline is likely a priority deadline, not drop-dead, and a few days late likely won’t matter. A lot of families are having these issues.

Has your fafsa been selected for verification? If so you need to wait it out. If not, you could update manually with the 2012 numbers. I believe you can still use the tool after that but I’m not 100% sure. I wouldn’t do that for at least a few more days to see if the tool becomes available.

Yes, we did claim an education credit and yes, we are getting a refund.

I didn’t actually submit the fafsa yet because I wasn’t sure about the retrieval tool. So it’s not signed or submitted yet. Do you think I should submit it with this years info OR change all my numbers back to last years and wait for the retrieval tool to work?

guitars - submit FAFSA ASAP - use your 2012 figures, do retrieval later.

I will. Thanks so much
