Irvine Fall Admit w/Honors vs. Berkeley Spring Admit

Irvine major: Business Information Management
The honors program is really appealing to me, especially with priority enrollment and guaranteed housing. However, I don't know how the BIM major is at Irvine (or even just the Business Administration major). Also, it's not as well known as Berkeley, but I have heard that the professors are good at Merage. My friend told me that the environment is relaxed and the classes are relatively easy (i.e, less stress). I don't really like the idea of how Irvine is a commuter campus and is dead on the weekends. I'm visiting Irvine next week for Discover UCI and CHP Stay Over Program.

Berkley major: Pre-Business, L&S
As a Spring Admit, I would first attend FPF (Fall extension program) and then join Berkeley for the spring. I already know a professor at Haas so I feel like that would be helpful. However, I have to apply to Haas in my sophomore year and there is around a 50% chance I won't get in. I have to figure out a back-up plan in case things don't go the way I had planned. I like Berkeley's environment better and love Telegraph. The classes will be larger than the ones at Irvine.

In your opinion, which school should I attend, weighing both the pros and cons? Why?
Any advice is greatly appreciated; Thank you :)

What is their Fall Extension Program? Is that a study abroad thing or some other off-campus program?

The “con” is that if you won’t be on Berkeley’s campus until Spring, you’ll miss any icebreaker activities the school has during the week before school starts.

The Fall Extension program is for only Spring Admits. It’s about 2 blocks away from campus and if I’m lucky, I’ll be able to get housing for fall and spring on campus. The classes are easier and smaller (~50 ppl per class, only 700 can get in FPF), but they don’t offer any science classes. However, since I’m pre-business, that doesn’t matter to me.

I’m sorry, but this sounds hinky to me…kind of the Ellis Island for Berkeley admits.

Well, for business, Berkeley is better. So, if you want to go to Berkeley, go there.

However, find out if the spring admits who are “a couple blocks away” get to participate in the “ice breaker” activities that schools usually host the week before classes start in the fall.

Haas is legendary. stick with UCB.

If you love Cal, go there.

And, read thru the cc archives. Take Calc thru the FPF, and it’s a much more generous curve (read gpa booster).

Yeah, I’ve read about that. I plan on taking Math 1B for FPF if I go to Cal.

And yes, spring admits participate in everything fall admits do if they live on campus. FPF is only for one semester and nobody looks down on spring admits
