Is 1000 words too many for the personal statement in the Common Application? It's about 1.5 pages single spaced.

I would think so, yes. The common app states the essay should be about 500 words; yours is twice that!

Ultimately, however, it depends on the content. Is the 1000 words necessary to get your idea across?

where does it say that there is a 500 word limit? i can't seem to find that... it only says a 250 word minimum...

I think it's a lot. Don't they limit it to like 500words max?

I didn't see any maximum length specified.

The limit in previous years was 500 words.

This year, no formal limit is stated.

One can therefore conclude that one may go over 500 words.

However, imo, one should not conclude that one may go to double the previous limit.

I wouldn't go there.

yeah its a little too much but im sure you can cut it down. My essay is about 800 something and i just wrote it. But i found a lot of wordiness and stuff, so i would say just get editors cut it down to around 600.

I think it's alright for now since I'm just using it for ED where there are not nearly as many applicants=less essays to read

There is no mention in the Common Application this year of maximum length on the Personal Statement, just a minimum (250 words). There is, though, a "common consensus" on CC that 500 words is the maximum.

Personally, I think you can write as much as you like as long as it is compelling and you have a topic that will carry the length. One, of course, runs the risk of taking up the adcom's time, but what the hell!!!
