Is 13 Credit Hours good enough for someone with a part time job?

Hello, I am wondering if whether or not I should take more classes for my first year of college. I’m not sure if 13 is too little, for someone with a job. Thank you.

Also, I work at most 20 hours a week.

It really depends on where you go to school. At Clemson, you need 30 credit hours to become a sophomore and if you take 13 credits each semester you’ll only have 26. Is your job on or off campus?

Could you add 3 credits of gym or dance, etc.? Get the credits without a lot of homework.

Wow, I never realized my University had an hours requirement for progression. Thank you for mentioning this!
I’ll have to take 15 then. I work off campus. But my University’s website says it’s recommend to take 12 or less if working. :frowning:

This might be an obvious suggestion, but if you are at a large university you should be able to take some classes in the summer to keep up your progression. If you work 20 hours a week, it could be difficult taking a full time load of 15 hours.

Another thing to consider is tuition. What is the cost for 13 hours? 15? 11? Often there is a cutoff.

I would just be careful being overloaded with school and work. The first year is often the hardest; getting used to the workload and the freedom.

“13 credits” means absolutely nothing. One of my hardest semesters was 14 credits whereas I had semesters that were 18+ credits that were a breeze.

What is the workload of these courses like? Are they lit classes that require 200+ pages of reading in between each class? Art courses which take more time than any job? A course that “only” requires 2 exams?

At Rice, some freshmen take 13 credit hours their first semester, and that’s perfectly acceptable.

However, you need to average more than 13 to graduate in 8 semesters, unless you have lots of useful credit (E.g. AP) going in.

Try 15. If it’s too hard then drop 3 later. If you only take 13 then you will not able to drop.
Reduce your work hours to 10 and work more during the breaks or summer. Be realistic. You really don’t know your mileage yet in the first semester. You could be put on probation at the end of the semester.

To graduate “on time”/ 4 years- you would need to complete at the minimum 15 cr. per semester. it almost seems like your school is trying to get you to do a 9th semester lol. I’ve never done fewer than 15 cr and have worked up to 30 hours. It really depends on what you can/cannot handle. I would up the credits and make it clear to your job that school is your priority; should you need to drop a few hours
