Is 1510 new sat low?

I’m hearing SO many mixed things about new sat… On the calculator it says it is equal to a 2190… that’s pretty low!! I got 730 reading and 780 math (7/8 7/8 7/8 on essay). I’m applying to ivies. I’ve been told my SAT is my weakest asset, but how low is it in actuality? Will schools like Georgetown Duke and the Ivies think it’s too low? On my old SAT I got 2240, but I was told to submit the 1510.

I’ve heard that 1500+ is good for ivies, but I’ve also been told 1510 is equal to less than 2200… Pleas help!!

I should add that I’m an Asian American (Korean) with US residency and US citizenshiP!!

1510 is roughly equivalent to 2240. It’s a very good score. They won’t think it’s too low, but it alone will not get you in.

The perception of the Ivies only take the 1550-1600 kids is wrong. I’d say people can get a perfect SAT score with all sorts of extraC but yet the person shows no personalities, unique hook of interest, the applicant will fail. There are just too many of look-alikes in the admission pool of applicants. I often joke - Asian Males - yup… 800 MM check, 800 SAT II Math check, 13 AP classes check, 10 ExtraCs check, Volunteering, check… want to be a doctor, engineerer… check… now the so what… the Ivies still have plenty of such applications around… why pick you over the others? Instead of worrying about SATs … think about what makes you special over the others. That’s the key. JMHO

@Bigflowersusie Actually I’m a girl HAHA and I don’t want to do STEM and my testing scores are not that high… I want to be an environmental op-ed writer and with all due respect, I find it quite insulting that you attributed me to the stereotypical asian. But I totally agree with you 100%, about how someone can look SO good on paper but be so dull (like an academic robot)-- it’s one of my pet peeves I actually wrote a short story that won in the Scholastics Writing Contest about the Asian obsession with Ivy League

There are maybe 5-10 schools in the country where a 1510 SAT is below average. A 1510 will be fine, to go along with a great application along it. Ivies reject more 1600’s than they accept.

@hungrihippo yeah the new sat is shot. I got a 1440 :frowning: 1510 is not bad though, even for the ivies. No, it’s not ideal, but it’s more than enough to get your foot in the door. You’re def within striking range if the rest of your app is strong.

@IN4655 Which schools have AVERAGE SAT above 1510?

@itsgettingreal17 Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, Columbia, Chicago, Duke, CIT, WashU, and 50/50 right above or at 1510 Vandy, Johns Hopkins and Dartmouth. CIT has the highest average SAT at 1560 (not surprising given there non-discriminating policy towards asians and there small class size) followed by a few schools at 1540. Your score is still above the 25th percentile at everywhere but CIT though so your in a place where your SAT score won’t eliminate you for anywhere.

@IN4655 Where did you get those stats?

@itsgettingreal17 They are pretty easy to find with google searches.

Thanks.

This is funny… I got deferred from Brown ED also and intended to major in English and minor in Environmental Studies to become a writer for environmental science journals and publications (on top of other things)!

@ap012199 HAHA omg thats crazy what the heck!!! I’m sorry u were deferred I was pretty bummed (I cried so much) but thats so cool to find someone so similar! we should talk more (this is my first time on this site and idk if this is an inappropriate thing to ask), but just thought it was pretty cool to meet someone who applied to same school, same major, same minor, same career interests

Actually, I’m in a GroupMe for deferred Brown ED students. If you pm me your email I could add you to the group! I also ended up applying EDII to Pomona after visiting and doing more research (they have an amazing English program with an emphasis in creative writing and an unparalleled Environmental Analysis interdisciplinary program).

@ap012199 Sorry I have no clue what a GroupMe is… is that an app or website?? I’d love to be added tho I’ll pm you my email after learning more about this “group me” :stuck_out_tongue: I didn’t EDII anywhere but I really like Dartmouth’s Environmental Programs and activities and I think that is my second choice… plus they have a great writing program!

@hungrihippo “GroupMe” is a popular group chat app that acts as the same as group messaging does, except you cannot see each other’s numbers.
