I am a freshman in community college and i am taking 18 units for my first semester. I currently have 19 units from taking classes when i was in high school and i recieved an A in all my classes. Nevertheless, i have never taken 18 units in one semester before and want too know if you think it is to much.

Pre Calculus- 5 Units
PRIN OF COMPOSITION 2 -3 Units
INTRO TO SOCIOLOGY - 3 Units
INTRO TO PSYCH- 3 Units
Fundamental Chemistry -4 Units ( Includes lab)

My math and chemistry class will be difficult, but i believe that i can recieve an A in the other three classes. Please give me advice.

Hmm…your schedule seems feasible. I just don’t understand why the pre-cal class is 5 credits? If it was 3 credits, I’d say you have a tough though manageable schedule.

The best time to do 18 credits is actually in the first semester/freshman year because those are all the introductory classes. But 12-15 is alright. If you’re in a hurry and can take the workload of 18 credits then do it.

If you suck at math, pre-calculus will be difficult (depending on your teacher). If you suck at chemistry, your life is going to be a living hell (speaking from experience thru o-series). Intro psych, sociology, and english are joke classes (were to me).

Drop one and pick it up the next semester if you’re doing poorly in either of your 4 or 5 unit classes unless you are confident you can get your grade up. I made the mistake of not dropping my first chem class after getting a 21% on the first exam (had a fever) and paid for it with a passing but crappy grade at the end and a huge GPA drop. It was a huge uphill battle and I studied my brains out for that one class while neglecting all of my others.

I agree that your humanities classes should be easy. If you HAVE to drop a course, I’d drop the math and take it another semester; or, find one that counts as less hours?

You can start with the 18, but as others have said, keep track of your grades. ALSO, make sure you know the drop dates for classes. It varies from college to college, but it will be posted somewhere. Many colleges let you drop a class before that date and the class just goes away. The policy varies.

Psych and Soc will not be terribly difficult, but they will involve lots of reading.
