I have a 101.51 GPA (weighted). My school doesn't do class ranking.

SAT: (first time) 2040
CR: 650 M: 730 W: 660
I would retake but November is too late. I need October for my science SAT II.

SAT II: Math II 740
I'm taking Physics in October. Aiming for 740+. I might also retake Math II, aiming for 780+.

I've taken/will take these AP classes:
10th grade: AP Global
11th grade: AP US History, AP Biology, AP Russian
12th grade: AP Literature, AP Macro, AP Calc BC, AP Physics 2

I am in NHS, have won bronze for a Russian essay contest.

I have volunteered 200+ (school and community combined). I've gone to two clubs for 9th and 10th grade (I excluded the ones I didn't participate a lot in).

I have taken five courses at a CUNY college.

I worked as an office assistant the summer before 9th. I'm working at a park this summer. Last summer I did a science research internship (chemistry).

I am fluent in Chinese and conversant in Russian.

Aaaaand that is probably the extent of my extracurriculars.

I'm interested in math/engineering.

Please help! D; I want to apply to Cornell ED, it's my first choice school. Do I have any chance in getting in?

Cornell only looks at CR and Math…so combined you have a 1380 out of 1600…Which is low for Cornell but I still think you have a chance. Cornell would be a reach though unfortunately.

@Kreig01 : It’s enough if I still have a chance. I think I’m going to have good recommendations but my essay may or may not be strong… Should I bother applying for ED? I’m retaking the SAT in Nov. but that’s too late to submit.

@Catria : I’ve heard, but I really want to do math/engineering. :/

@bartmta : I forgot to mention, I’m taking the ACT in September, aiming for a 32. If I don’t get 32+ I’m going to retake in October.

Cornell doesn’t look at the writing section, so you have a 1380/1600. Around 40 kids or so are accepted to Cornell each year from my school (even though it’s just a regular public school) and the SAT for people who are accepted to Cornell from my school is a 1350 (and that’s including kids who get in but don’t matriculate).

Bottom line: your scores aren’t going to hold you back, but it certainly could give you a boost if you get that SAT up to a 1450+.

@frostyy : Thanks! ^-^ I can’t retake the SAT until November though (and that will be too late) because I’m still missing a science SAT subject (I’m taking Physics in October). My extracurriculars are weak too though :(

@nyckid9 In my opinion, it’d probably be best to take the ACT in September, the SAT subject tests in October, and then the SAT in November (for your RD schools, if necessary).

If you can manage a 33 on the ACT and a 750+ on a science and a 780+ on Math II, you should get into Cornell ED with your ECs (based on what I’ve seen). It’s not impossible for you to get a 33 on the ACT if you do some practice tests and familiarize yourself with the test.

For your ECs, I would try and emphasize your research experience and your 5 CUNY courses because those seem to be the most interesting ones and the ones that pertain most to your intended major/field.

Your CR+M is near the 25th percentile for Cornell students. Admitted applicants w scores on the low side generally have a strong hook, e.g. low income URM, recruited athlete, development case.

Since u are fluent in Chinese, I am reading between the lines that you are asian race. If so, the bar will be set a LOT higher.

@frostyy : That’s when I’m planning on taking all of them. I’m aiming for 2150+ on my second SAT, but if I don’t get accepted into Cornell, I’m not applying for any other Ivy schools. So I don’t know if I need a higher SAT score tbh. The other schools I have in mind are like CUNY/SUNY schools (basically my safety schools).

I’m going to work on ACT, math, and physics this summer and I can maybe pull off a 33. If not, I’m retaking in October. I can maybe get 780+ on Math II. I studied for half a week, and focused on topics I didn’t learn (which did NOT appear on the test. I’m still mad about that). This time I’m studying with much more time so I think 780+ is possible. I don’t completely suck at math.

And the 5 CUNY courses were on subjects very unrelated. It was my way of finding a field I’m interested in I guess. I took (not in order) cinema, media, psychology, astronomy, and probability&statistics. I have As in all except p&s (A-) and media (I have to ask my grade). So I think the only one that relates is the statistics class… :S

Thank you so much! I considered not applying to Cornell because I thought there was like NO chance they’d accept me (not like there is much of a chance but still). I’ll study hard this summer. ^-^ I’m probably still going to get denied though because I’m Chinese and I don’t even compare. :(

@GMTplus7 : Yeah, I know. I looked up stats. I don’t think I have a strong hook though. :S And agh this is why I dislike being Asian. Not all are smart. :(

@Marrissa : Because I only took math II and for Cornell engineering, they require one math of any level and one science. I need October for physics. Gah, if only they had September SATs…

My niece just graduated from high school and got into Cornell with a 2060
Sat and sat 2’s 650/800. 12 AP courses and several B’s and average EC’s. however she was deferred ED from Cornell, then accepted into the guaranteed transfer program RD for sophomore year so she declined it. Writing a good essay helped.
She got into another top 15 school where she is going instead. Good luck.

@Tcanc6 I don’t think that would work for me. Because I’m Chinese, I’m competing against others who have done much more and scored much higher. Or if your niece is Asian, did she get accepted for music or sports or the like? Someone I know got in with scores similar to mine but she was a really talented violinist. So I don’t think it’s the same for me as for your niece. And thanks :)

Before u shoot your only ED on Cornell, can u articulate objectively why Cornell is your 1st choice? Is it only because it is an ivy w a higher admit rate? If so, then that’s not a good reason.

I think your SAT score is enough to put you in the pool of Cornell. Writing a great essay might help you a lot.
And if you can get 32+ score on ACT you’ll get a better chance.
