I’m a senior in high school and have completed three years of science (College Prep Bio, Honors Chem, and Honors Physics). I am currently in AP Bio and am struggling. IF I dropped the course how would this look for colleges?
I would still be taking 5 courses (AP Calc, AP Comp Sci, AP Micro, AP Italian and Honors Lit). I plan on majoring in finance.
If it puts a W2 on your transcript, it may not be the way to go. If possible, finish the semester and swap classes at that point.
For a finance major, only having 3 sciences shouldn’t be too detrimental. You still have major related courses (Micro, Calc) that show your interest in the field, more or less.
Talk to your guidance counselor. IMO if you submitted your application to colleges with the course on it, you would have to notify each college that you dropped the course and that looks bad. If you get a W that looks bad. In terms of 3 or 4 years of science, you can look online at the colleges you are considering and see what coursework they recommend.
You’re taking AP CS, which counts as a science. Therefore, you can drop AP Bio and still be fine for sciences. Is there a fun elective you could take instead? (Avoid “study hall”). It could be an art, current event, shop, cooking&nutrition…
Agree that you should look on the websites of your targeted colleges and see their expectations. Also, I agree that an empty period wont look good if you withdraw, but again it depends on the schools you are targeting.
If you take 3 sciences, your selection of biology, chemistry, and physics is the best possible combination (unlike many others posting this type of question who have something like biology, AP biology, and AP env sci or some other unbalanced distribution that make it look like they are avoiding something like physics). Check each college’s web pages to see what its expectations are.
AP CS may be seen as a science, or as a math, or as an academic elective, depending on the college.
As far as I am aware colleges don’t see the number of study halls you take? The transcripts that my school publishes don’t included them. Would there be any other way for colleges to see the amount of study halls taken?
Your GC will indicate how many periods there are in a given day on the SSR.
If your GC states there are 8 periods, including one for lunch, it means you can take 7 classes.
If you take 5 classes, you clearly have 2 study halls.
