I'm going to UCSB with a 5800 debt and haven't heard back from all the scholarships. I don't know if I'm getting any but lets assume I'm walking in with that kind of debt. How much do you guys think will accumluate over the course of four years and do you guys think it'll be worth it? I don't know if I should just go to a community college and be debt-free or go to UCSB with a 5800 debt. Economy is bad too so after four years if its not better, it'll be looking pretty bad for me. If you guys were in my shoes, would you go to a community college or stick with UCSB? Much appreciated, and thanks.
P.S. my parents have 0 EFC so they cannot help me. I'll be repaying after I graduate.

is it subsidized or not?

usually the school will estimate that you need more than you really do. so the loans will be more than enough for a year or two. i know a friend who took out the loans recommended by the finaid office and she used less than what she took out. (i dont know what she did with it but she’ll have to pay it back later on. i guess you can take the loans (if they’re subsidized) and invest in a CD or high paying interest account and make your loans work for you.) in my case, the school advised i take about 8k in loans and my parents cough up about $800 as well as me getting workstudy. in the end, my parents paid 3k over my first year add maybe $500 for books and i didnt have to work.
so what i’m trying to say is maybe dont accept the loans for the time being and see how much you’ll have to pay per quarter to stay at UCSB and consider taking out a loan then. maybe you wont have to take out such a big loan.

Is this $5800 a year or for four years?

Is it subsidized or unsubsidized?

I agree with tr1p7s. :)

I believe 3500 is subsidized and the other 2300(might not take this one) isn’t. And thanks for the responses guys. It’ll be for the first year, but years after that won’t be as bad. So, whats up with Cal Grants? Its proposed that it’ll cut new receipients but allow class of 08’ to receive aid if eligible. I wish they’d tell us now so I can choose between SB or a CC. >___<
