Is it worth to wind up with 60K-70K total debt just to get the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor CS-engineering degree with A & B grades and averaged talents? Thanks for advise. Will the name and the degree particularly pay off in future putting the total debt in consideration?

That is a ridiculous amount of debt to graduate with. The average Michigan student graduates with $22,312 in debt. You don't want about a year's salary in debt when you graduate, not for undergraduate education. It's your Masters that will be looked at, not your Bachelors degree. That's just something to get you into grad school. Do you plan on just ending after your UG education? Still, I wouldn't advise graduationg with that much debt. You could always go to a cost saving option the first two years and transfer to a top school.

I just finished my first 2 years at Oakalnd Community College and I got admitted to U of M - AA. For whatever ridiclous reason, I am classified as out-of-state resident and therefore the tuition is skyrocketing. Each semster about $16K and multiply this by an average 4-5 semester to finish B.S.E you will end up with between 65-70k. yet, I have Michigan grant of $3,000 a semester plus work-study program of 1500 a semester. Still confused and I don't have money to pay any part of the eductaion expesnes other than my cost of living in Ann Arbor.

Fight with the financial aid office to get residency. If that fails, attend school in your "home" state. 60-70k of debt for an undergrad degree isn't worth it at any school. (Alright, maybe Harvard)

I agree w/ dsmo + A2...60k+ of debt when you come out of school is gonna be really tough to deal w/...

Oakland CC? Down by Detroit? Why wouldn't you be an in-state resident? Do you live in Michigan? I mean, talk to the office. You should have residency, unless you moved to Michigan with the intent of going to a Michigan CC so that you could get in-state tuition at Michigan when you transfer there.

I agree with you guys that I should have my residency in michigan and pay in-state tuition which is much cheaper to me. I have a visa that is parole and I am here to become Permanent resident later within next 2 years timeframe. Yet, I am eligible to work and study. In fact, I have been resding in my michigan since 1999 and I have been working full time as well since 2000 and paid taxes to michigan state since then so i should be at least considered resident of michigan in eyes of U of M. Because of my visa status, Registrar Office rejected my initial claim and my Resdiency App. and I appealed already providing the info. about my visa stats and my work. Oh also I own resdiential property and pay property tax since 2001 to michigsn state. I don't know what else I can prove to U of M to gain my residency. One thing about U of M that it is very stricted when it comes to residency and hard to obtian in many cases. Also, its out-of-state tuition is the most expesnive than any other public school nationwide.

It sounds like you have a good case for residency. Just keep at it with the office. Other people with the same kind of problems have made it work.

Thanks dmso. Waiting for Registrar appeal committee to make up their final decision about my case to grant my michigan residency otherwise I will be seriously thinking of another school.
