Is 690 SAT writing score too low for IVY league?

Hi,
My DS1 is a swimmer, and hopefully can be recruited as a D1 athlete. He is a Jr, just took SAT. All other scores are ok, but the writing section is only 690. His AI would be around 230 to 235. Is this W 690 too low for IVY league, specially for HYP? His swimming is at W. JNAT level, not a top recruit yet. Does he need to re-take? Really no time to study.

Learnt a lot from this forum, thanks! And thanks in advance for this question!

If he’s a 230-235 AI, that must mean his SAT CR and Math scores are around 780 and he has a 4.0 gpa.

I don’t think his academics will be a stumbling block - his recruitability will hinge on his swim times.

I agree with @varska - With a 230 AI, a 690 W score is a nonissue at any Ivy.

Yeah, he is very unbalanced, with still higher Math and SAT IIs scores, lower CR score, (but better than writing. ) Thank you all for your replies. Looks like we rather spend more time on swim training.

I agree with other posters that if the coach is interested to offer him a LL then 690 is not an issue. Still if it was his first attempt at SAT I would recommend to take it again to become even more valuable academically. Your son may be recruited just to increase the team’s AI or he may have to apply on his own with some limited support. You never know and there is still plenty of time.

Have your son prep from the Melzer’s SAT grammar book and Clements’ Killer SAT Essay book. My son got a 660 on the SAT Writing the first go-around, and after prepping from these two books he got an 800. Very do-able.

I would not bother re testing. My son was never asked for his critical reading score, and no one ever mentioned that it would be an issue. He had a 230 AI, and every coach he spoke with told him to not bother taking anymore tests once he pulled a 1400 something on the SAT. A 230+ AI is over the average AI at every Ivy, and shouldn’t create any issues at all. Plus, a 690 is not all THAT poor of a score in any normal universe.
