Is 9 too much?

Im making the list of colleges that I am goin to apply to. I have narrowed it down to 9. My only dilemma is that I am 75% confident that I will go to UF if I get in. Is it a waste for me to apply to so many other colleges?
I will be applying to:
UF-75% if i got in
Vandy-20% if i got in
NorthW- 2.5% if in
UVA- 2.5% if in
Duke- just want to see if i can get in-which i wont
Cornell- just want to see if i can get in
Auburn- safety
UCF-safety
Georgia Tech- is kind of a safety- high acceptance rate
I mean chances are good that I only get into 3 or 4 of these colleges- UF Auburn, UCF, and GT/UVA...So is applying to the other colleges a waste of money, effort, and time?

9 is stretching it a bit.

If you want to save money and you really aren't interested at all in going to Duke/Cornell you could drop them off of the list. Seems like wasted effort, time and money if you're not planning on going anyway. Other than that it seems like a decent mix, maybe drop a safety and/or one of UVA/NW if money is tight, but 7 is a pretty reasonable number of schools to apply to if you're aiming high.

6-8 is recommended. I think you should aim for that, but if you've really researched those schools and have concluded that you'd love going there, and if you feel you can complete all the applications to the best of your ability, then I'd say go for it. I think, though, that the max # colleges one should apply to is 10 (given that each has a different application). But that's just me.

Why bother applying to the two schools you would only have a 2.5% chance of going to if you got in? It sounds like you don't care much for those schools; drop them from the list.

the 2.5% is for if i got into all of the colleges...which i probably won't. So if I get into UVA but not NW or Vandy, then i would have a 25% chance of going to UVA

I have this same problem with UMich, if I get in there, I'll go there. And it seems like the best place I will likely get in.

I think you should apply to:
1. UF
2. Vandy
3. EITHER NorthW or UVA
4. EITHER Duke or Cornell
5. Georgia Tech
6. Auburn
7. UCF

or, more practically, drop Duke/Cornell and apply to both NorthW and UVA

Dont apply places just to see if you get in.

"too many" not "too much"

I totally agree with Alamode..

Choose NW and Duke

no, you'll never know how much money you will get from the schools...

Look, sit down and talk to your parents about money. UF is a cheap, good school. Theoretically if you get into X school that costs X amount of money, will your praents let u go/support you? Most of the schools on that list will run you pretty deep.

just apply to them all.

it isn't going to hurt to apply to more schools. who knows what might come out of reach schools. you might be pleasantly surprised.

since when is Cornell harder to get into than Northwestern

collegeboard:

Cornell 1280-1490

Northwestern: 1320-1500

Heres my stats
Sat: 1420/1600....2040/2400
AP: USH(4), Chem(4), Lang(4), Stat(5)
Senoir Sched: AP calc, AP bio, Ap lit, physics H, band
GPA: un=3.9 weight=4.4
EC: Teen Court attorney (3 hours a week 2 years), NHS, Brevard Youth Leadership (8, 8 hour meetings and i headed a service project), Juvenile Diabetes Fundraiser, Varsity Tennis 4 year (have a lot of awards and honors for this), USTA Team tennis- 2nd in state, PADI scuba diver (working on becoming an advanced open water diver)
I dont think I should bother applying to Duke because it is a very minute chance I would would get in, Vandy /NW/Cornell are my reaches

" "too many" not "too much" "

it's always funny to see ppl correct each other's grammar on forums.....
ROFL

psst-- are those SAT midranges for Cornell total and Northwestern total, or for arts and sciences only?

those are the ranges for NU and Cornell as whole universities. Just like Cornell, NU has many smaller schools that do not emphasize testing (i.e., music, communications, education, etc.) And yet, NU still has higher scores, which says something about its selectivity.

i agree with alamode. although, why apply to Duke if you're certain you won't be admitted? applying costs money, after all

georgia tech isn't much of a safety school, just to let you know. forget about the acceptance rate, basically there are lots of people in georgia and only two major public universities (UGA and GT, and UGA isn't even mentioned very often). AND publics get picky when it comes to out-of-state.

what majors or subjects are you interested in, btw?
