Is a 1 hour commute to Berkeley realistic?

I'm just curious. It's an interesting situation. I imagine that this would be extremely difficult but I have no idea.

Thanks for any help!

Depends. 1-hour commute by you driving or taking bus or taking BART?

I’ve been commuting an hour and a half for the last 3 semesters by car. I did BART for a while but driving is way better. It is definitely doable.

I know someone who takes a one hour commute by BART (so obviously driving is faster), she seems to be doing it just fine. It does mean you have to stay on campus all day and have all your stuff though. I personally would not be able to do it just because I like being able to go back home in the middle of the day and it’s also a lot of gas.

I did a one hour commute by BART this semester and it was fine. That said, this is my last semester and thus I only have to go to campus three days a week (two days a week for my internship in SF). I think it would work well if you accept that your social life at Berkeley is going to be strained and don’t mind not going home for breaks, lunch, etc.

Yes definitely do able! In fact it saves you a lot of money. Was an interesting experience, and I plan on doing it again next semester

I did a 1hr daily commute through bart and it wasn’t too bad. 1hr isn’t that much for a commute actually. I think you will be fine

It’s doable, but almost needless to say, not recommended for most people. Berkeley isn’t just about classes.

I only know one person who commuted and managed to be successful in class (3.8+ GPA), and that was because he was able to work effectively on the BART train.

I live about 45 miles from Cal, and I commuted almost every weekend when I was a student there. So yes, it’s completely doable. :-)

Although, my parents have groaned about the driving once or twice. :P

I live in SF and if I’m at Cal next year, I will be moving to Oakland (only because Berkeley is not that great). You basically want to be near the campus in case you forget anything at home, have a long break in between classes or other things at school and you’ll feel way more part of the community that way.

I commute 1.5 hours to Berkeley everyday. It’s not bad. I lived in the dorms first year and honestly living at home is so much better. The amount of money you save is astronomical.

I’ve commuted from Berkeley before– it’s not terrible, but at the same time, you’ll be missing out on a lot of campus events after classes. However, purely from an academics and classes standpoint, it’s completely doable. Though those 8 AMs will be painful.

how does commuting affect your GPA? I’ve heard that it’s harder for commuters to retain a good GPA
