is a 1630 an acceptable score ??

Hey guys,
I took the SAT ,and got a combined score 1630.
410 in CR ,620 in MAth.. and 600 in writing.

I do have an option of retaking the SAT , but i feel that i wouldn't be able to improve my score ,because i'm really bad in the critical reading section. For maths and writing ,yes. its easy to improve. but for critical reading its very tough .atleast for me.

Are my scores acceptable to universities such as .

University of Houston or Texas A& M, ?

Your critical reading score is low, of course, but the other two scores are a little above average for those schools. If your grades are decent, I’d say you have a good shot at both.

Did you study for the CR section? If you didn’t, then it may help to take a few practice tests just so you can budget your time a bit better, which I’m guessing is your problem.

Only if it’s out of 1600.

I practiced alot for the critical reading section… even more than the Maths and the writing section.

actually its very hard me to keep focus on the CR section.
thats why :(

Don’t be too upset, I think that a lot of people have that same problem. What I find helps the most is to mouth the words in the passages to myself as I read, and go back to the passage to justify each answer. If you manage to do this relatively quickly, you should definitely be able to raise a 410.

You can always do better, I recommend retaking.

just try to push yourself to give your full attention to CR for around an hour a day, and if you can, try to increase your time spent on studying for it. you will be surprised how much you can improve. Best of luck! :)

Yeah… I’ll try…:)

I’m not trying to be optimistic but do u guys think i have a chance at University of Texas at Austin even with a score of 1630?

Well first of all I think your score is likely to go up with just a little bit of practice and study.

Secondly if the rest of your app is solid I think your scores give you a decent shot at those schools

if your in the top 10%, the SAT won’t matter for UT

Math is incredibly easy to imrpove, all you need is some good logic skills. I reccomend you take it again, Just to be on the safe side

The problem is that…
when i was studying for the SAT… i didn’t knew that the writing section doesnt count that much … if i had known of it earlier… than i could’ve worked harder on the CR section and less on the writing section… its kind of like i wasted my efforts on something irrelevant

There’s no irrelevant part of the test. Writing is 800 points like CR and Math. If you can’t get your CR up (which I don’t believe; I think you just need a little discipline, or maybe some attention defecit medication, if need be) at least try and get the Writing and Math sections up.

You score is still “above average” as far as most students in the US are concerned. The average is something like 1550. For the schools you’re looking at, I think you’ll be fine if you can get those scores up a bit.

^^^
What i meant to say in my previous post was that,
many or most of the universities do not count or give high regards to the writing section.isn’t this true? :O

When i was studying for the SAT,i gave more importance to writing and math,
but many universities usually only count the math and the reading section and exclude the writing section.

More weight is given to CR/Math, but my point was that writing isn’t irrelevant. It wouldn’t look good to score in the 700s on CR and Math, then get a 500 in writing. It’s not as important, but it’s important nonetheless. :)
