Is a 21 on ACT Good?

My GPA is 3.73,i got a 21 on the ACT, im not that good at taking tests, will that 21 affect me a lot when applying to a good college.

No, its not. Thats the equivalent of 1400/2400. GPA looks solid. Try the SAT for a 1900 minimum to start contemplating top 30 schools…

That is an opinion question. Some people would love to get a 21, some think it’s a not-so-great score. It depends on what schools you’re looking at.

In any case, perhaps you should try the SAT for comparison.

No, it isn’t good at all. It doesn’t meet the benchmarks.

I don’t think people should be so harsh in saying that it’s not a good score. Remember, the average test score is a 21 in the nation (even though most CC users boast incredible standardized test scores :-P.)

Silvestre-If you’re applying to the ivies and/or other top schools a 21 would most likely not suffice. I know how it feels to struggle at testing. I had anxiety problems, and I frequently ran out of time. The best advice I can give is practice, practice, practice. The more comfortable you get with the questions asked, and the time restraints, the easier it will be to decrease anxiety. The ACT is a STANDARDIZED test, meaning it tests pretty much the same thing each test date. Good luck, and if you need any other tips (study schedule, good prep books, etc), feel free to PM me.

I also get nervous when taken standardized tests

@ Silvestre12: Your GPA is very nice, but you should look to improve that score. Most people on this forum would thrash you for that grade, but just work to improve it. I know a guy who got into Brown with like a 25 ACT.

When it comes to college admissions, the SAT/ACT does carry weight, but you need solid essays/recs, class rank, course rigor, passions/interests, your school/background matters, and show adcoms who you really are & how you will benefit the school.

Try the SAT or keep working on raising that ACT, calm your nervousness (try singing in your head the whole time, clear your mind, practice a lot to get comfortable, etc.). Best Wishes! :)

I would go here: [Optional List | FairTest](ACT/SAT Optional List for Fall 2025 - Fairtest)

There are some great schools which the SATS/ACTS are optional such as: Sarah Lawrence, Bennington, Bard, Bowdoin, College Of Holy Cross, College of the Atlantic, Columbia College- Chicago, Connecticut College, Franklin and Marshall College, George Mason U, Knox College, Lake Forest, Lawrence U, Lewis and Clark College, Providence College, Rollins College, Wheaton College, Drew U, etc.

^^^add Goucher College

OP, how your stats rank depends on what colleges you’re interested in. Do you have any on your list yet?

Smith is another test optional school

Hampshire College I think is also test optional.
