Is a 3 really bad?

As a sophmore, I took AP European History as my first AP class and I got a 3. I was happy because history is not my best subject. As a junior, I took AP chemistry and AP englis lang and got a 3 on both. I was happy with the ap eng lang score but I was hoping for a 4 on the chemistry. In my opinion, a 3 is passing and I am satisfied while I read that many are dissastified with a 4. What do you think about this?

I do believe most colleges only accept 4s or 5s for credit but I may be wrong. It also depends on the colleges you are looking at.
I got a four on my first AP test and I was dissatisfied only because I loved the subject, I studied really hard, and I felt my efforts were wasted. I also felt like I disappointed my teacher.
If you are satisfied then that's all that matters. End of story.

No! A 3 is NOT a bad score in the least. It says you passed the test, which means you knew the subject. Colleges usually only give credit for 4's and 5's. But a lot of people on CC are overachievers who are absolutely devastated by 4's. Which I think is silly, but I can understand it at the same time.

But don't feel bad about 3's at all.

No, a 3 is a passing score so it is perfectly acceptable. It means you knew your material, so that's good. However, most of the time colleges don't give credit for 3's so that may be a negative aspect. But don't worry, most people here are crazy overachievers who wouldn't be content with anything lower than 5, which seems a little outrageous at times, but that's just who they are... but if you're satisfied, that's what matters. Don't doubt your thinking just because some CC'er made you think otherwise.

it's not a great score...but not a bad score by any means :)
(psst... ppl here on CC are overachievers so they complain about 4's.)

Most people in my school will be happy with a 3! A 3 is good.

I thought most colleges did give credit for 3s--just not the colleges kids on CC typically shoot for. The state colleges that I've seen here in Florida definitely accept 3s as long as they're not in, say, calculus for an engineering major (completely fine for English majors, though).

Anyway, do not feel bad about a 3: like everyone mentioned, this is a passing score. The CollegeBoard, the association of the United States college system that has taken years to refine the AP system, considers a score of 3 as qualified in the course material. This is a passing score: you knew what you were doing in a college course while in high school. It's a good thing.

No, it's really not. But I understand your issues. I've received a 4 on pretty much every AP exam I've taken, something I should be proud of, but all of my friends are straigth 5ers, and so it's so hard to be proud of a good score like that when everyone else is getting great scores. Nonetheless, a passing score shows knowledge. I haven't received my AP German score yet, but I'll be thrilled if I get a 3. That was a hard freakin' test.

There are lots of colleges that will give credit for a 3; however, the more selective colleges will generally only give credit for a 4 or 5. Be sure to research AP credit policy for the colleges in which you are interested.

A 3 is better than a 2.

A 2 is better than a 1.

If you got a 1, at least you tried.

If you've never taken an AP/IB ... shouldn't CC have scared you away by now?

don't get caught up in how ridiculous people are.

a 3 is very good, that's usually the score you need for credit.
it's only really competitive schools that require 4's and 5's.

but even UCLA is an incredibly competitive school, and it accepts 3's on several exams, including U.S. history.

a 3 won't particularly help you to gain admissions to really competitive colleges, but it won't hurt you either. even if you think it will, you don't have to right it down.
but keep in mind that there's a good chance it will earn you credit in college. so go on the colleges your interested in's websites and see if they will.

Nope. People on here just have too high standards.

what if im the valedictorian and only have 3 4's, no 5's?
and i'm gonna take 5/6 more this coming year (im gonna be a junior)
and i wanna apply to prestigious colleges

^^^First off if YOU are the valedictorian for your school, you probably have high standards which is understandable. However, college is not only about book smarts, you need street smarts and people skills too. One of these people skills is knowing when and where to flaunt and brag. It's okay if you do it on CC, but you have to be in the right crowd. If you are on a board with other CCers who are in the running for AP Scholar or something of the sort, go ahead, flaunt your valedictorian status and ur 4s. But, if you're on a thread of someone who studied incredibly hard but could only pull off a 3, you don't flaunt then, you don't rave about how you could only pull off a 4 and how YOU were disappointed. This would only be grinding salt in the would of someone who is already down. College is all about developing those types of skills, of people skills, and of knowing when and where to exactly show your standards. That is life.

Oh and btw, a 3 is still very good. Many colleges take 3s in certain subjects such as Chemistry and Physics. As Collegeboard says, a 3 still means "Qualified to receive college credit"

Simply put, people are overachievers.

A 3 is a great score. It isn't bad.

3 is qualified according College Board.
a lot of people at my school would be really happy with that score.
most people on CC are just over-achievers. people here complain about a score of 790 on SAT2, a 4 on an AP test...
these things are just... ridiculous to me at first and never even heard of at my school.

It depends on where you're looking to go. Some colleges would be more than happy to give you credit for a 3. Some won't even give you credit for AP courses at all.

youve already gotten a lot of opinions. but it depends on how you look at it. a 3 is passing. 2s and 1s are 'bad'. almost any school besides HYPS, etc will give you credit for a three.

for someone who's not a history buff, i think a 3 in euro is good. and also, i found eng lang very hard to prep for, i think it really just shows your ability to comprehend, utilize, etc language. and also, ive heard chemistry is a toughie. so i dont think any of those are bad at all.

it may have just been that you didn't do good that day or you arent an amazing test taker. my best friend (BEST writer ive ever known, his vocabulary is MASSIVE.) got a TWO on english. I crapped my pants (metaphorically).

Sungchul: "A 3 is better than a 2.

A 2 is better than a 1.

If you got a 1, at least you tried.

If you've never taken an AP/IB ... shouldn't CC have scared you away by now? "

Great response :)

yes it is. You are a failure and no college will ever accept you, not even community colleges.
