Is A 31 ACT Good Enough For U of M?

I’m an in-state student with a pretty good gpa and pretty good EC’s. I know U of M has become super competitive recently. I’m just wondering if a 31 on the ACT good enough score. Also, sorry if this is the wrong format or location for this post; I just joined 5 minutes ago. Thanks a ton for the help!

Have you checked naviance for your HS?

Probably for LS&A, Nursing, or Kineseology you are OK if you have a high GPA, rigorous schedule and good EC’s and apply EA (!). Of course, higher is better. For engineering you’ll likely need better especially in math. It also matters a lot on your high school. Which school are you applying to?

I think Ls&a and then maybe transfer into Ross after a year

The current ACT interquartile range is 29-33 for Michigan which puts you in the middle at 31. The ‘safe’ number, where scores significantly above it will make little difference is 33. Your ACT score is just one data point that admissions uses so look at it in an overall context of grades, EC’s , recommendations, essays, and rigor.

If you apply to Ross pre-admit you will probably want more than a 31. There are no guarantees, however, my son was denied Ross PA (but accepted engineering) with a 36 and 4.0 (MI UW GPA) (probably because of his essay which was written before he developed an interest in finance).

i got in with a 31 last year from oos

Sweet!!! Did you apple early action?

I got in with a 31 back in 2012, but yes applying early is important in your case. They tell you that early action doesn’t mean you will be evaluated with different standards, but here is where the advantage comes in:

Umich reviews early action applicants first, and then uses rolling admissions after. There are roughly 6000 seats for each freshman class. If you apply early action, you are competing with other applicants for 6000 open seats. After early action, they probably anticipate having a certain number of seats filled, say roughly 3000. If you apply soon after the early action deadline, then you will be competing against other applicants for the remaining 3000 open seats, meaning more competition. As more open seats get filled up during the application period, the more competitive you need to be to hope for acceptance.

I got in with a 30 and a 3.9 something GPA in-state. You’ll be fine

Note that the in state admission rate has dropped this year. ACT 31 is within the admission range but definitely not in a safety zone. My friend’s son got rejected a couple years ago from in state by CoE with ACT 33. For LSA, ACT 31 should be around the admission average from in state and the chance should be higher the overall in state admission rate.
