Is a 4 bad?

Hi everyone. I got my ap biology exam back with a 4. I go to a small private high school where many people get 5s. Our school only offers science and math APs, so this is the only AP score my prospective colleges will see (Barnard, Tufts, Bryn Mawr…). Is this a score worth sending them? Thanks!

You should check and see if a 4 on Biology will count as credits at the prospective colleges where you are applying. That is the important thing.

A 4 is not at all bad by any means. In fact, it is a very good score. The important thing, however, is if you will get credit for it or not. It is still worth sending though even if you don’t get credit.

No.

You don’t send AP scores to the colleges you apply to. Instead, when you fill out your application you self report your AP scores and then send formal scored only to the college you ultimately pick. Obviously you send ACT, SAT and Subject test scores but not AP scores

I just did a whole bunch of research on it and I can report that that a ‘4’ is passing. It’s not as good as a ‘5’, but definitely above a ‘3’.

A 4, especially for bio, is extremely good. You’re in the top 28% of the nation in terms of biology. Even if you don’t get credit, it might be worth reporting because it stills shows high proficiency in biology. The schools won’t know what other people at your school get, so they compare to the distribution.

Usually there is no need to report your AP scores as part of the admissions process. The schools you are applying to like to see that you took AP classes if they were available to you, and hopefully you did well in them. Once you decide where to attend, review the info for your school regarding credit for AP scores. You are typically given credit and or it is counted as fulfilling a curriculum requirement. 4’s and 5’s usually are accepted. The ability to get some credits this way frees you up to take more electives. For some students at less selective universities is can also mean graduating earlier and saving $$. Once you enroll, be sure to remember to send your scores so you do get credit.
