Is a 4th year of math super important?

Hi, so it is time to decide my schedule again and I am going to be a senior. I took Honors Geometry freshman year because I had already taken Algebra 1 in 8th grade at my Jr. High. Then I took Honors Algebra 2 sophomore year and dropped down to Prep Pre-calc my junior year (this year) because math really isn’t my thing. I had originally only planned to take only that much math, but I was looking around and saw that some schools required 4 years of math of algebra 1 or higher. Would my algebra 1 from Jr. high count? If not I would go into Prep Calc my senior year. Thanks for all your help!

Check each college to see what it wants. Some may accept completion of higher level courses as proof of knowledge of the lower level courses (e.g. algebra 2 as proof that you know algebra 1). Others may have different rules. If they want to see four years of math even if you started advanced, or if they want to see a math course during 12th grade, then you have to take a math course.

If you are aiming for very selective colleges, taking calculus if available to you can improve your course rigor compared to not taking calculus at all (of course, it can also matter if it affects whether your counselor indicates that you chose the “most demanding” courses). Otherwise, it depends on your potential college majors as to whether calculus will be useful to you.
