Is a 780 on US History a bad score?

Just checked my scores today, got a 780 on USH.

I was wondering, is this score HYPSM-acceptable? Based on the results thread, it seems like every other person got an 800, which makes my score look awfully weak.

How much would retaking and getting an 800 help me in admissions?

I got a 770 on the June USH. It was my first non-800 on an SAT II, so I was disappointed, but then I took a second and thought about it. A 780 is fine and an 800 will make no difference in the big picture.

No. 780 is a good score.

A “bad score” would be more like in the 500s-mid 600s range.

is it good enough that retaking for an 800 would be a waste of time?

A 780 is very, very good. There is little difference (as little as 2 questions) between a 780 and a 800.

I wouldn’t retake it as a) you could do worse, which would make presenting your case to non-score choice schools harder and b) your time could probably be better managed doing something else.

Are you really asking if 780 is bad? I would understand if it were Math 2 (because I did get a 780 in that, but was worried because that’s notorious for its extremely generous curve/low percentiles) but I’m pretty sure history isn’t viewed the same way.

To echo angelin, a 780 in USH is still 96th percentile.

blankusername, I had a 750 on my U.S. history SATII, and I’m now a freshman at Harvard. I seriously thought you were joking when you asked whether 780 is a bad score.

This is a crazy question. No college including HYP will differentiate between 780 and 800 (despite of some posters with 800s trying to convince themselves otherwise).

780 is not worth retaking. if you get rejected from a college, it will not be because they were looking for that 780 to be an 800.

OMG you got a 780? you are doomed, now off to a CC!

lol.

No.

It’s a little bit of a bummer to get 780 because it’s so close to 800 (I got 790 which was frustrating…) but the reality is that the difference between a 780 and an 800 is so little that it is flat out not worth your time to retake it. 780 is a fantastic score that you should be plenty happy with. All colleges, including HYP, will look favorably upon it.

“where are those 20 points?” do you think your mom is happy with it?
“If you can not get 800, at least get 799!!!” hahahaha

i got a 780 in world history
should i take us history next year to compensate? (i only want 1 humanities lol)

780 is already a good score. Don’t waste any more money on College Board or your morning to get an 800.

780 USH is what I got. I thought for a second or two that I’d retake it for an 800, then I realized how insane that was to do for TWO questions on that test. 780 is perfectly fine and won’t hurt your application to any schools.

there is always a risk for re-take, you 'll get a lower score.
