Is a 93% unweighted GPA enough for HYP?

Is a 93-94% unweighted GPA for a transcript that consists entirely of honors and AP level courses at a fairly rigorous, competitive private school good enough for HYP? I can assure you that the curriculum is more challenging that local public schools in the area.

(Note: this isn't for me, obviously since I'm going to college next year. It's for a cousin of mine. They're eating dinner with us. Thanks!)

Depends on how you rank with the GPA. Aren’t you already going to Princeton?

His school doesn’t rank, but he estimates he’s in the top 10 out of 130 kids.

Top 10 out of 130 probably not for HYP without an extraordinary EC or a hook.

But it’s at a competitive school? Are you forgetting that schools like Lawrenceville or Groton or even lesser known schools like PDS/Peddie get more than just a couple kids in HYP?

And - there really isn’t a huge difference amongst the top ten… I’m assuming the highest unweighted is around a 95 and probably the lowest is around a 91 or 92 unweighted.

Then a 93 is a great GPA. The question is, were people with similar GPA at his school accepted in the past?

Sure, those schools get lots of kids into top colleges, but the vast majority getting into HYPS from there will be wealthy legacies, recruited athletes, URMs, children of the powerful…Numbers 14-25 are what’s easy from top high schools…especially once you go from the very top (Andover, SPS, Exeter) to Peddie. You’d be hard pressed to find an unhooked Exeter grad getting into HYPS who wasn’t a rock star there.

lalalalalalalalalaa well most of the kids at our school with good GPAs don’t have anything stellar in terms of personality/ECAs…

So it’s not really a 3.7… it’s like a 3.88 for 9th grade. 3.94 for 10th grade.

Frankly, if your cousin is at a private prep, their guidance folks would have the best clue as to who gets into HYP, etc.

If his school is on Naviance, that’s also a good indicator.

^Agreed. It’s a different ball game for kids from top preps, and CCers aren’t really equipped with all the information to reliably chance your cousin.

I’m familiar with what sounds like a similar academic private school, of a similar size. That school regularly has several acceptances to HYPS from candidates in the top quartile. That school doesn’t rank.

I’m somewhat baffled as to why your cousin would pose the question (through you) on this board. In practice a school like his would have very knowledgeable GC who could give him very precise answers to such a question – based on past history at the school, and inside knowledge of HYPS admissions. Is your point to confirm the answer?
