I was accepted to the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Arts and Science. My eventual goal is to pursue an honors degree in economics(or joint honors with finance) and since the arts and science faculty requires me to split my credits with a science I was wondering if I should accept the offer form the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Arts and Science.
The Arts and Science program is a double major, one in humanities and social sciences the other in the sciences, leading to the degree of “Bachelor of Arts and Science”. If you are not interested in a science major you should not choose it.
For an economics major and finance minor the Faculty of Arts program would be the better choice.
@TomSrOfBoston Thank you! Would attempting to transfer to the Desautels Faculty of Management in my second(U1) be worth it for economics or are the arts and management economics degrees relatively similar?
I would think that transferring to Desautels would be pretty difficult.
@57special That makes sense, is the Desautels Econ program significantly better than the arts Econ?
@Proxy123 Economics in Desautels would have more of an applied focus.
@TomSrOfBoston sorry this may be an oddly specific question, but I saw on the McGill website that a joint honors program in finance and economics is offered by the faculty of arts. Would I also need to be accepted into Desautels since it includes a major in finance which is not offered by the arts department?
@Proxy123 Sorry, can’t answer that.
@TomSrOfBoston no problem, thanks!
@Proxy123 I believe you apply to the program during/after U0. Typically requires a very high (e.g., 3.75) GPA which is a challenge at McGill.
@Proxy123 You would have to talk to your Honours advisor, both in the Econ dept. and in the Finance/Desautels dept. before embarking on your dual honours degree. Honors Econ alone is considered to be extremely tough. I don’t know if a dual Finance/Econ is tougher, but I know it’s hard. S1 has a friend in HIM- Honours Investment Management and it’s a grind.
