Is a bad freshman year important?

OK, so here's my situation. I didn't really know that honors wasn't that hard when I signed up for high school, so I only signed up for two. My four core classes this year were Earth and Environmental science, Algebra 1, Honors English, Honors World History. I also didn't take a language this year.

I've made straight A's this year, but I'm still ranked around 150/680 right now. Next year I'm taking 4 honors and 1 AP. I will also take one foreign language, and continue with Debate and Theatre. Here's my question: how much will this hurt me? I'm going to double up in math junior year, which will put me in Calculus AB. However, I will still only receive 3 credits of Latin. Also, by doubling up, I will lose 1 slot for AP's.

I've also heard that colleges like to see you improve over the course of your high school career? Is this true? If so, could this situation actually help me?

Hello???

You really should improve your sophomore and junior years. For example, if you got straight As in sophomore and junior years, then freshman year will pretty much be ignored. Upward trend is always beneficial.

…

They realize that freshman year is for gaining your footing and realizing what high school life is like. If you have an upward trend, you’ll be fine.
