Is a BFA required for a MFA?

I've been wondering about this because it could affect which Universities I'm appyling to. Sorry if this has been discussed before, I tried searching.

I want to go into an art career. Also, I want a MFA. However, I don't want to a) go to an art school or b) major in a bad art program at a University.

I know it differs for different Universities, but do they all require a BFA? Or is a BA and a portfolio all that's nessecary?

i think you only need a ba

nope! Any bachelors degree will do, as long as your portfolio is competitive. It will bar you from certain schools though- Cincinatti insists upon a BFA, Carnegie Mellon and RISD are pretty BFA-centric too, though RISD has three year MFAs for people without one if you're willing to take that long.
