I'm going to get a cell phone real soon
and wonder if a camera phone is worthy.
(i have a digital camera btw)
what do you think? do u find a camera phone useful?
(oh money isnt really an issue, cuz they have a free camera phone,
but a camera phone is heavier and bulkier than a regular phone.. soo)

also, should i get a phone with a college area code or hometown area code??
i'm from florida, but will go a college in NC. (i have no family in US btw)
i'd go for cheaper one.. what do you think and what did you do?

well... i dont use my camera phone for anything but taking random shots, basically. the software/cable to connect to my computer costs like 40 dollars, and i dont think the pics are high enough quality to buy cable anyway. personally, i would choose the regular phone, because my camera phone IS bulky and if i ever want to take pics, i just use my dig. camera.

you can, however send your camera phone pics to a film processing place and they can print them, but i've never done that.

The camera phones won't give you the best picture possible, plus many of them don't have a flash. The pics you get are small too, usually good for keeping on your phone and emailing through your phone. A camera phone is not necessarily heavier and bulkier; I have a Samsung Camera Phone which is slimmer and lighter than both of my parents' non-camera Motorolas.

The area code is up to you. I don't think there is a price difference. If you don't have any relatives or anyone to call you in your hometown, then I'd get the NC area code, so that your friends on campus can easily call you from a local phone.

IMO, if you have a digital camera, a cameraphone isn't necesary at all. I guess it's nice if you want to send something to someone right that moment, but they're usually low on megapixels, so nothing worth printing out. I don't like cameraphones because they're too bulky for my tastes. I like a small phone, and camera phones tend to not only be bulkier, but aslo have a wider screen. You may like that, I do not.

No experience with camera phones, can't help you there. Would like to point out that I've never had a camera phone and don't feel like I'm missing out on anything.

I say go with the college area code. I did when I moved, even though it was in-state (well, SoCal to NorCal, so it's almost like changing states). It should be free to change your cell phone number if you already have one; tell them you're moving, and they waive the $25-or-so fee. Having a college-area number will, as redski59 said, take away the right for anyone in town to say "I couldn't call you long distance" as a reason for not calling. :D It doesn't matter too much though, and is more a matter of personal preference; long-distance just doesn't seem to matter on cell phones anymore.

I have a camera phone, but just because it so happened to come with my phone. Its useful for taking pictures of people at parties etc. and then showing it to them later, but truly, I wouldn't be sad without it.

get a digital camera. the camera phone pictures are kinda pointless unless you can hook them up to ur pc somehow. i have one (since it came w/ my phone) and its fun for random pictures but thats about it.

I would choose a flip phone. They're thicker, but they're shorter -- they fit in places a lot better than open-face phones. I have an open-face phone and I have it set to automatically lock -- sometimes I don't lock it before I put it away, and it dials numbers. Highly irritating. Given the option, I'd take a flip phone any day.

flip! it's more fun and you don't end up accidentally calling people! plus you can see who's calling before u answer!

I have a camera phone and I agree, I use it occasionally but I wouldn't be sad without it.

I have cingular too, and I used to have the Motorolla V220 which has a camera, is small, and is flip. it was a good phone, just don't take the antenna out or it gets wiggley when u put it back in hehe

flip phone definitely. my old phone was the tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiny ericson open face (?) color phone, but i love my new flip phone better. now all i need is a sidekick, lol.

Definitey Flip, my old phone was a "candybar" style phone and I lost so many minutes because I would forget to lock the keypad and the phone would randomly call my speed dial numbers! :o

Of the phones you listed, I like the Sony Ericsson Z500a. The LG refurb would be ok too, but if you get the Sony for free then go with that.

DO NOT GET THE ERICSSON Z500a. that thing is HUGE. i actually saw all the phones at cingular when i went to but my phone. that 500a one is one of the biggest phones i've ever seen.

get the new black razr. i have the silver one and it's soooo thin i can put it in my pocket if i want and i hardly feel it. its a little wider than the other phones but its incredible thin.

I dunno about where you should get the phone. I know people who have school area codes and people who have home area codes. I have a National plan (no roaming) so it doesn't matter at all to me.

DUH - where in NC will you be - I ask cuz there are some issues in NC you need to be aware of.

For good service in NC - I strongly recommend you consider getting TRI-MODE service - 2 channels of digital and 1 channel of analog - will work just about anywhere in NC - or just about anywhere for that matter.

I would also recommend you consider a national plan with NO roaming versus a regional plan - price difference is minimal - i.e. - Verizon - tho only able to arrange in Raleigh or by on-line purchase or maybe even Cingular. Just about any area code is ok - since many/most now have national plans - no longer a long distance issue - except if from a land line.

A decent phone for the price - and per a recent deal/new subscriber is the LG 6100 - is camera phone - is tri-mode - has good amount of bells and wistles - is flip phone also. Even the LG 4xxx is a good choice - no camera - but a decent phone.

And for ANY student - I would also strongly recommend the insurance - to minimize things when lost or broken.

TRUE TRUE TRUE

it's hard to find TRI-MODE cell phone in the near-bottom price rage.
the cheapest Cingular phone that's tri-mode was something like 180 dollars. T_T

Why not get it? It's free and even if you're worried about the size, it isn't that much bigger than a comparable phone without a camera. Plus, even if the pics aren't the best, they're great for those random, quirky moments where you wouldn't have a camera.
