My son was admitted to UCSB. We live in Florida and even though he has a pick up truck now, he won't be taking it to college.

What is the public transportation like in Santa Barbara? Will it be difficult for him to get around town?

Thanks for your help.

ucsb students can ride the buses in the area for free. see http://www.tps.ucsb.edu/mtdbus_tap1.htm

And there is plenty to do on-campus and in Isla Vista, easily accessible via foot or bicycle.

Everywhere kids need to go is very close to the campus. However, downtown Santa Barbara is about a 15 minute drive down the freeway. I'd only bring a car if I was planning on driving back home to LA or SF.

UCSB is perfect for someone like your son who won't be taking a car because even if the students there do have one they just leave it parked and rarely use it since most people use their bikes so don't worry and congratulations to you for being the mother of a student who will be attending an awesome university.

btw, parking at the UC's is ridiculous.

are freshman even allowed a car? i know at santa cruz... you're not allowed one until after sophomore year

I think UCSC and UCD are the only UC's that don't let freshman bring cars.

sounds like hogwarts in harry potter land, no broomsticks/no cars for first years. haha

You can have a car (or parking spot) at Francisco Torres for an additional fee. According to the housing website. And Francisco Torres is a generally freshmen dorm so I think we can bring our cars if we want. What would college be without road trips?
