I’m currently looking for a new laptop to replace my small school laptop which just died on me. I used this laptop to type papers, open powerpoints/lecture slides in class, stream music and occasionally watch a movie on it. Would a Chromebook be worth it?
My daughter’s college states on their website that a Chromebook is not a good option. Her school provides the students with some free programs and apps which don’t work with Chromebooks. Chromebooks also don’t have the same capabilities as a regular laptop so you might find that it doesn’t meet all of your needs.
Can you check to see if your school has recommendations for laptops? Or talk to other students at your school to see what the minimum requirements are for a device and if anyone is able to get by with just a Chromebook?
My daughter’s laptop also died at the end of the school year last year, and we bought her a Chromebook to use during the summer, but we still had to bite the bullet and get her a new laptop before she went back to school.
No, not for the kind of memory you will need.
Most universities will work with you and will give you a discount.
Some recommend that you wait and purchase it with them-the prices for my 3 kids have been good and usually better options.
They preload your software packages and explain what you might need.
If you buy your computer somewhere else, they can help answer your computer requirements. Don’t be afraid to ask.
The computer staff wants you to succeed and they try not to sell you what you don’t need.
Nope. Chromebook is -sorry elder uses- for granpas and grannies who just want to read books and watch old soap operas on screens.
My kids both have school issued chromebooks but they use their own laptops at home anyway. They find chromebooks good for lightweight size and ease of carrying around but limited value as an only laptop.
Nope. My friend had a chrome book last school year and she couldn’t use it while it was charging. In addition, she could only write her papers on google docs. And this summer she worked to save up to buy a new laptop amongst other things. So, if possible, I would recommend you try and get a laptop that is not a chromebook
It depends on your major and how comfortable you are with Google. I am now a teacher, with a school issues laptop (Windows) and do not use word, or any other non- google based product. For me, a high memory (so a larger chromebook) would be okay. As an education major, my tablet was often all i needed as 95% of my requirements were related to typing papers…
No. Most of the apps will require a constant internet connection to use effectively. Can’t do much with it when I’m traveling unless I’m willing to pay for cellular data.
Chromebooks are the workhorses of the high school student, but just don’t have the apps that you will need for college.
