Is a Counselor Recommendation Even Required?

I couldn't help but notice that a lot of colleges don't a list a guidance counselor recommendation under their list of requirements. Are they just assuming this will be inclusive with the counselor' school report, or do they not want it at all?

I feel that not sending a GC rec might hurt me because he thinks I'm like the best student ever. He wrote me a rec for a summer program, which I never read, but was informed in the admissions letter that they enjoyed my recommendations very much.

Sooo yeah...any help would be appreciated

Many colleges/universities don’t require a counselor’s letter. That is because they base their admissions decisions entirely on the high school transcript and ACT/SAT scores. Read through the requirements for each institution carefully, and send what they ask for. Some public universities will admit in-state candidates based on their transcript and test scores, but out-of-state candidates will need to provide more letters of recommendation.

Also, even if you don’t need that letter for admission, you may need it to be considered for scholarships. So check through the college/university website to find out about that too.

Good luck!

Yes, if they ask for a school report instead of just a transcript.

In our experience, state publics did not request it, but were generally liberal with regard to submission of recommendations and supplemental materials (music, art, writing samples, etc.) except in the instance you were applying via a “guaranteed admission” track based strictly on GPA/rank/scores. By contrast, all of the private schools requested a Secondary School Report, which is prepared by the counselor and covers many things, including a section for counselor’s recommendation.
