Is a double degree worth it?

I attend school at Tulane University. I’m a freshman. Anyways, I was pursuing a double major in Economics and Finance, in hopes to eventually work at a BB. I found out about a double/dual degree for undergraduates where you basically get two different bachelor degrees. For me, it would be a BSM in Finance and a BS or a BA in Economics. Instead of 120 hour I would need 150 hours to graduate. I came in with a lot of AP credits so I would only have to average 17.5 hours a semester to graduate in four years, which isn’t a big deal for me. My question is: Is it worth it? Would having two bachelor degrees make me stand out at all. I obviously don’t go to an Ivy or anywhere overly prestigious, although Tulane does have several good wall street connections. If I continue my 3.7+ish GPA would getting a dual degree be better than just a double major or does none of it really matter? And if you think it would be better, would you say a BS in Econ is a lot better than a BA. Because a BA would make the program a good deal easier.

I don’t know if I’m in the minority but I generally don’t think that a double major is worth the time. But it would be worthwhile to first talk to your career center and see what they think.

I agree that a double major doesn’t get you much if you are doing it for job reasons. Especially if you have to spend an extra year in school when you could be earning a salary. You could pick one to major in and minor in the other and that would show you have skills in each.

On the other hand, if your want the double major because you are really interested in the subjects and want to learn about them, that’s a different thing. But you must still consider whether an extra year is worth the cost. My son is considering this for these reasons when he starts school this fall. But it might end up being a major/minor so he can get done in 4 years, so we’ll see.

If you are taking on an extra major to make yourself more marketable in jobs, than it’s not really worth it. A degree in Finance is enough. If you want to get a degree in Econ, because you love the idea of studying Econ, than do it.

If you’re set on Econ, I’d suggest a minor or BS.

I would suggest focusing on one major. Either BSM in finance or BS/BA in economics. I would not worry about a minor or double major/dual degree because it is not worth it. Focus on getting one degree with good grades and a good internship rather than double majoring. You will be stressed out and will notice employers want internships, good grades but most importantly internships/work experience in that field. Focus on one and get an internship in that one and you will notice it is for the best.
