Is a "hook" a necessity for the Computer-Based Honors Program?

I’m a 17 year old white male interested in the CBHP. My test scores are not stellar from a CBHP applicant’s standpoint, but they are ok (32 ACT/1410 SAT), and my GPA is good (4.4 w, 4.0 uw). I’m also a NMSF (and hoping to advance!), but I have a feeling that that this is not uncommon among CBHP applicants. One setback is that most of my extracurriculars are somewhat run-of-the-mill (National Honor Society, etc).

Therefore, my main problem is I don’t have a real hook. I attended Boys State (which most colleges seem to like), but that’s about it in terms of something that might set me apart.

Will my essay have to “knock them dead” to really have a shot at this? Or is all hope already lost?

I really dont know, to be honest. It depends on the demand to get into CBHP, and I just don't know where it is now, especially in the wake of Witt's enrollment explosion. My advice is not lose hope and give it your all. Even if you don't get into CBHP the first time, know that there are people who will get accepted into other colleges and give up their things at UA (including spots in CBHP).

Ok, thanks. Are you in the CBHP? If so, how long was your essay and how much effort did you put into it?

No. I'm just a plain ole', honorless, scholarshipless, Joe Schmoe of a UA student.

jlauer95- I can go ahead and tell you that I don't think the essay is the deciding factor in CBHP. I think a major factor is the face-to-face and/or phone contact that you have with the Director and Program Manager of CBHP. My stats were comparable to yours. I think that they just want well-rounded students who show interest in the program.

Ohhhh.... I see. Thanks for the replies/advice!

I actually have met the director twice, but the meetings were a couple months ago so he probably won't remember me. Do you recommend that I meet with him again so that he can put a face to the application?

If you've already met with him, a call would probably suffice. As far as they essay goes, I just think they want a demonstrated work ethic and dedication. For mine, I mostly focused on my involvement in Student Government.

I see... Thanks!

I just sent in my application, so now I just have to contact the director, and I'll be done.

BTW, how long after the deadline for applications were you notified that you were accepted into the program?

I don't remember right off-hand. I'm thinking they notified people late January though. I'll check on that.

I'm gonna stand by the late January thing. Maybe around February 1. I checked old emails real quick and saw that I sent my registration for the Finalist Weekend back on Feb. 6 and I remember sending it in pretty soon after I was notified and had checked on plane tickets.

Oh! Cool! That's not too long.

Thanks for the advice/information.

you can pm me if you have any other questions...i think im going to be one of the ones who helps the the recruitment weekend...good luck!

Has anyone received notice regarding the CBHP? If so, would you please share your stats (SAT,ACT&GPA) whether you were accepted or rejected? Last year the average SATs were reported to be above 1470 on a 1600 scale.

I recently found out I was chosen as a finalist (which according to wdlan, essentially means I'm in if I go to the orientation and choose to attend U of A).

I know my stats (see OP) are considerably below average, so I guess I really lucked out!

jlauer: Congratulations. Do you return to Alabama on February 16 & 17 or is CBHP on Feb.16,17,,&18? Are you also a University Fellow? If so, did the CBHP notification come with the Univ. Fellows notification?

I believe the CBHP orientation this year is February 19-20.

I was informed that I am a finalist via email, but since I didn't apply for the University Fellows program, I didn't receive any notification about that. I considered applying for the University Fellows, but I missed the deadline for applications! :( It's probably for the best though. If I had applied and been accepted, I probably would be swamped for time (I imagine that the CBHP consumes enough of one's time as it is).

BTW: Are you a student who applied to the program (either CBHP or University Fellows?) A student already in the program/s? A parent?

Parent. February 19 & 20 fall on Monday and Tuesday;that's a bit unusual. University Fellows is on Friday and Saturday. Received very fancy invitation in the mail. I thought that all students might visit at the same time as I suspect that several Univ. Fellows will also be in CBHP,but I could be wrong. May I ask when you received your e-mail notification?

I think I received the email at the beginning of February, like February 2.

February 19 I believe is President's Day, which most students have off from school anyway. I think they chose that day to reduce the number of school days finalists would miss (then again, that could have been prevented by having it on the weekend, so...)

The fact that many of the CBHP students will also be in the Univ. Fellows program actually explains why they didn't schedule them at the same time. From what I can gather from the email, the CBHP orientation takes up a lot of time. Meeting everyone, interviews, discussions, and explanations... Scheduling it at the same time as Univ. Fellows would cause chaos!

When University Fellows didnt exist (in previous years), Academic Elite interviews were done the weekend before the CBH orientation. As you might have guessed, I know of about 10 or so (cant remember) CBH finalists from last year who had already been there the previous weekend and just stayed two more days for the CBHP orientation.

Now all eight Academic Elite scholarships go to University Fellows, and the scholarships are awarded during the Univ. Fellows weekend(Friday and Sat.) before the CBHP orientation.
