Is a major in History a good degree to have?

Hi

I recently graduated college and I have a BA in History. Maybe its just me and I am listening to too many people, but I thought when i majored in History that you could do most jobs, unless it was nurse, doctor, engineer, accountant. Well then came the recession, and now people keep saying that not all degrees are created equal. I know that the practical uses for my degree are museums and possibly teaching, however I was wondering a few things. Is it possible to get different, good jobs with a history degree? Would it be better if i had majored in something like english or spanish? I keep thinking that those two degrees especially english would have been better because I know with english you can be a journalist, editor, work for a publishing company and I even heard that if you are lucky, you could get into marketing or advertising. Is this true? Would I have the same career options with my BA in History?
