Is a Management Information Systems (MIS) degree worth pursuing?

Can I become successful with this degree? I have been having second thoughts about majoring in Computer Science. I know I would like to work in the I.T. field. I was unsure about the MIS degree as it is a business degree. Would an I.T. employer look down on a business degree rather than an actual I.T. or Comp Sci degree?

I would love to hear some input from current MIS majors.

Thanks!!

I am not a current MIS major; I used to hire a bunch of them. No problem if you want to work in IT. There are wide range of skills in IT, from purely business type of folks to the hard core CS people.

MIS is a great field. Nowadays, it’s one of the most essential skills to being a well-rounded business person. It’s also a field that will keep growing over your career span. The simplest way to put it is that CS people are breded to code and MIS people are breded to manage those programmers. It gives a really good all-around education for business. Check if your school offers a MS or PhD, that would usually indicate a strong program.

I guess what concerns me with this degree is that is primarily a business degree. I don’t know if I would want to be a manger of the programmers. I would like to have a job related to being in IT. I don’t necessarily want to “manage” an IT corporation. Does that make sense? Could I work in Info Security/Systems Analyst/Networking etc with an MIS degree or is this degree primarily geared towards management in an IT field?

Well of course you won’t be managing anyone at first. The jobs you listed are entry level jobs for all IT workers. You just have a more management background than CS majors so you have a good chance to advance.

If you are successful you will eventually manage people. To say you don’t want to manage anyone means you want to be a drone in your career. Bad attitude.

Plscatamacchia,

Thank you for your response. Would I be able to get those entry level jobs as an IT worker or would an MIS degree not be as helpful? Is MIS looked at as a real I.T. degree or just a businessman somewhat interested in I.T? As a comparison, I would want to be a Systems Analyst and not a Business Analyst. I would like to advance to positions such as Systems Admin and Networking Admin and such. I was under the impression that the MIS advancing would be geared towards managing other I.T. guys. Would I be even doing any I.T. technical work as a manger of I.T. professionals? You make a good point about not managing anyone. I wouldn’t mind doing that in the future of my career, but I would like to perform technical tasks as well.

Thanks again for your input.

I’m considering to double major in MIS & Informatics, as the University of Washington offers both. I have seen a lot of member mentioning MIS & Accounting double major. So which one is better ? (I’m not into auditing after all)
