Is a printer necessary?

I have a question for current students: is it really necessary to have a printer in the dorm room? Do students still print papers and turn them in, or are they submitted electronically? Do the computer labs have printers available to students? Thanks.

I would get a printer. Even if you don’t take a lot of writing courses (which DO want hard copies because they are easier to correct), there will be more than a handful of times when your like ‘crap I need a printer.’ For example, printing off tickets to a sports game or other attraction, printing off google maps directions, printing off resumes, etc. Printers are so cheap as well, so I can’t imagine a reason not to get one.

My room only had one printer (I lived in a triple), but I really wished I had my own. Otherwise you’ll be that bum asking everyone if you can use their printer when your lazy roommate doesn’t get new ink (even if you agree to split it) because he doesn’t need it but you do, like me >_>

EDIT: Computer Labs cost money. Not a lot, but I think you need a Terrapin Express account to pay (which a lot of students don’t have).

Okay, good to know. Thanks.

How much money does it cost to print off of the computer labs? And are the computer lab printers in color?

Its 10 cents a page i believe for b&w. Color is more (maybe like 40c, never printed in color)

I would definitely suggest bringing a printer, much less hassle, just try to bring one with really cheap ink cartridges.

I’ve had to print papers out for a lot of non-writing classes, so I would definitely recommend a printer. I don’t have Terrapin Express and even if I did I don’t think I would want to have to print at the computer labs…if you’re finishing a paper at 2am or you need to print a ticket for a sports game or whatever last minute, the last thing you want to do is have to run off to a computer lab.

are there computer labs in all of the dorms, or do you need to go somewhere else to access them?

No the dorms don’t have them, you have to go to a building with them, and some of them close at early times or are even closed on weekends.

Much better to have a printer. Having one that also makes copies (flat bed) is VERY useful, altho it raises the prices a bit. (Fax machine capability went unused).

I would highly recommend a laser printer. I never thought I would print much being in engineering and having mostly handwritten homework. I ended up printing over 300 pages this past year by myself. With a laser printer, one toner cartridge could possibly last you all four years. Just find a cheap one with good reviews. I wouldn’t worry about getting one that copies or prints in color. I never had a need to print in color or copy, but if either situation arose, nearly everyone else on your floor will have a regular inkjet printer that can copy.
