Is a State Championship impressive?

If you have been on a team that won a State Championship, is it worth putting on your application? Is it impressive at all?

If you can’t tell, I"m so not a “sports mom” and have no idea what information to give to the schools/ coaches. My son has amazing stats and both his coaches and coaches from other teams absolutely love him, but it’s for a sport that isn’t highly sought after by most schools and quite frankly, I’m not sure what any of it means. In the past, I’ve played down his accomplishments because, as I said, I just don’t get the sports thing. But, maybe it’s time to start talking him up.

All your noteworthy ECs where your kid placed and/or demonstrated leadership, you would put down, in the awards and recognition section. Some frame of reference like statistics or rating or ranking would help too. Something where you can show that your kid was nationally ranked in something might even be a hook depending on what the activity or sport was.

It can’t hurt to put it!

Well, not only have they won States, they also won Regionals. Now they are on their way to the World Series. Since it’s televised/streamed, we should be able to get a lot of good footage. Thinking about sending the link to a few coaches. Is that weird?

Being an athletic recruit certainly will help. But the level of support provided by the coaches varies considerably among the schools.

The best way to know for sure is to have your son reach out to the coaches at the schools he is interested in. When scheduling interviews, try to also meet with the coach. This face to face interaction can sometimes help. The coach will be up front and let you know if your son is ‘on the list’ or not.
